All users have equal right to share road

During this year's Motorcycle Awareness Week, drivers are again being urged to be more vigilant when looking for motorbikes on our roads.

This comes after a seemingly endless chorus of warnings to drivers to look out for other road users.

After a double fatality at Corrimal last month, drivers were told to look out for motorbikes; following the collision this month that kept Figtree triathlete Jessica Simpson out of her first international competition, drivers were told to be careful around cyclists; and drivers were again warned following the death of Kiama triathlete Jason Stortz, who was on a training ride in Yallah when he was killed.

Driving is not a right, it is a privilege and one which must be used with caution.

While cars may be the most numerous vehicles on our roads, cyclists and motorcyclists all have their place on our roads too and must be treated with the same respect motorists expect to receive.

Complacency can set in, as most of us drive without incident every single day.

However, time and again, when accidents occur, motorists wish they had paid just that little bit more attention.

Distractions such as music and conversations must take a back seat as only a momentary lapse in concentration can lead to catastrophic consequences.
