Illawarra Coal has demonstrated its commitment to the region with the release of its 30-year expansion plan for its Bulli seam mines. The plan details the maximum expansion of Appin and West Cliff mines. The expansion will benefit the region economically, both directly and indirectly, and most importantly will offer ongoing employment for about 3000 workers. It is a vote of confidence in the Illawarra and is encouraging news for our coal industry. The State Government is yet to assess the plan, and once it does the public will be asked for comments. The plan is sure to come under very close scrutiny from the growing band of those opposed to coal mining in favour of more environmentally friendly industries, as evidenced at last weekend's Climate Camp at Helensburgh. There is no doubt that the environment must be protected at all costs, but it is also vital to support companies who are prepared to invest in the future of the Illawarra.
