 Jones ignores party stance

Jones ignores party stance

Before the 2010 elections, Julia Gillard unequivocally placed herself on the public record as being opposed to same-sex marriage.

This was seen at the time as meaning that an incoming Labor Government would not be caving in to the Greens and their collaborators within Labor's socialist left faction to redefine marriage as it is presently enshrined in Australian law.

At that time there was no hint of dissent from Stephen Jones, who had recently been installed, without reference to Labor's local branches or rank and file members, into the position of Labor's candidate for the Throsby electorate. Indeed, it was impossible even to elicit information from him as to where he stood on the subject.

Since his election, Stephen has displayed a lack of attention to matters affecting Australia's national interest such as protecting what is left of our steel industry by demanding that Australian and multinational corporations carrying out development in Australia be mandated by the government to use Australian products, in particular, Australian steel.

He remains silent about the ability of multinational interests to simply walk onto prime agricultural lands and commence highly damaging coal seam gas operations, or the fact that thousands of working-class families are having their electricity and gas supplies cut off due to their inability to meet the cost of escalating power bills.

These and many other urgent matters appear to be disregarded in favour of promoting his proposed same-sex marriage private members bill, even to the point of supporting a rent-a-crowd group from Sydney that intends to hold a public forum in Wollongong in the near future (Mercury, January 24) promoting his stance that ignores his local ALP branches, party members and electors.

For Stephen's information, Illawarra electors and ALP members alike, are unlikely to be influenced by any rent-a-crowd group blowing into Wollongong for a few hours and telling us we should be redefining marriage, the age-old institution that has served humanity so well over millennia. We are quite capable of forming our own opinions without interference from outside pressure groups.

Poor Julia Gillard, however, must be agonising about what is going wrong with the great ALP, when some head office-installed upstart can force a Labor prime minister either to change her pre-election commitment and support his preposterous private member's bill or, embarrassingly, walk across the floor and vote with the Coalition.

Having actively participated in politics for the past 50-odd years, I can't remember having witnessed or read about a prime minister ever being placed in such an embarrassing predicament.

Heterosexual marriage involving one man and one woman, in any case, must be preserved and recognised as a unique institution among all human relationships, predicated on the creation of new life and the preservation of family life Australians have always known.

Australian children have a right to know, bond with and share the love and protection of both a mother and a father. No other form of human or social relationship can hold out the promise of this benefit to future generations.

There is of course, an easy answer to this complex question and that is for the Gillard Labor Government simply to hold an unambiguously worded referendum on the subject, concurrent with next year's Federal elections.

I hope he knows where the local Centrelink office is, he will need its help after next election when, hopefully, the local electorate gets a LOCAL member who is attuned to the real needs of the community!

This is an appalling dereliction of duty to those who entrusted him with their hopes for solutions to the many problems that affect the Throsby electorate.

How about doing something about the ruinous Carbon Tax that the government, he represents,is inflicting on us?

Re the 'rent-a-crowd' from Sydney reference, I will be at the marriage equality meeting on Sunday, and have been a Wollongong resident and ratepayer since 1973. I will be there learning how to better support my gay daughter's right to marry the woman she loves.

Bob who? I would argue that we need more people like Stephen Jones in politics who are well aware of the levels of discrimination that the GLBITQ community continue to face and who aren’t afraid to go against party lines. If people do not see this as a matter of national interest, they must be blind. The fact that Bob believes Sunday’s work shop will only be supported by a rent-a-crowd style audience is proof that he lacks knowledge on this issue.

Part of a Sydney rent-a-crowd? Not me. I intend to be at the marriage equality workshop, and I've lived in Wollong for over 30 years.

well that would have to be just about the worse opinion piece i can remember -sorry, there are always australian editorials. really, if you have a point to make mr harrison diatribe does not do it justice. i happen to think the same sex issue is dead boring and dont know why gay folk (and many of them agree) want to reinvent a conservative convention. i.e. why get so excited about marriage anyway ... relationships are what matters.

that being said, like many moral issues, i think conscience votes are the way to go. this has to be dealt with and sooner the better. what's the problem?

I don't know if Bob Morrison paid attention, but last year the ALP National Conference, with Julia Gillard in attendance, change the ALP policy to support marriage equality for same sex couples. Even if Ms Gillard's view hasn't changed, she doesn't decide ALP policy, the Conference does.

As for Stephen Jones, he has indicated publicly that he has taken the matter to heart because he can not see a valid reason that such discrimination continues to exist. If he has read this article, he is unlikely to have got one, but he will have seen cynical political opportunism in action.

Move into the 21st century bobo. The small number of ALP members left in the Illawarra make up a very minor part of the voting public. You and Noreen Hay need to stop trying to drive out MPs who are actually doing things that the public like. Now, I wonder who Ms Hay has in mind for the seat of Throsby?

Mr Harrison,

I lived in the Wollongong and know that there is a large Gay community, if you want to talk about locals, Is the Labor party still parachuting special people in to become the local members of parliament.

Maybe Noreen can come out publicly and state her position instead of sending one of you to voice her oppinions..

BTW, its your bigoted attitude that drives most people out of the Illawarra.

Good onya Bob. All this gay marriage crap is just a sideshow, get back to the big picture. If something isn't done pronto, there won't be a steelworks in 2 years time. Here we are worrying about silly bloody things like this.
