Wollongong swimmer Robert Hurley is in the US preparing for the FINA World Swimming Championships in Rome in July.Hurley, 20, is a member of Wests Illawarra Aquatic Club and attends the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
Here he writes about his latest swimming meet at the University of Arizona:
"Last Thursday we travelled from Flagtsaff to Tuscon to compete in the Southwest Classic meet at the University of Arizona.
Racing started on Friday and after a fairly sluggish heat swim I won the 400m Freestyle final that night from out in lane 7 beating Canada's Olympic 1500m freestyle bronze medallist Ryan Cochrane by 0.3 seconds.
It was a tough swim coming so soon after a hard period of altitude training. Ryan was about a half length in front at the halfway point until I took the lead at the 300m mark and held him off over that last 100m. The time of 3:50.25 was encouraging in the conditions especially at this stage of my preparation.
The following day I placed 4th to Kenrick Monk in a close 200m Freestyle final in 1.49.61 where just 0.7 seconds separated the first 5 swimmers, all Australians. I struggled to keep up with the pace early in the race but finished off strongly over that final 50m to just miss the placings.
By finishing 4th I was then selected to swim in the 'A' team of the 4x200m Freestyle relay that same night and we easily beat the University of Arizona team by a few seconds.
On the third and final day in Tuscon I posted some solid times in the 50m Freestyle, 100m Butterfly and 100m Backstroke, a few of my 'off' events which I swam just to get further race practise.
"Today we're heading to California for the final leg of the USA's Grand Prix series, the Santa Clara International. Here I will line up against many of last year's Olympic Gold medallists including Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Tae Hwan Park and Oussama Mellouli.
I was happy with how I raced in Arizona and I hope to improve on those performances at Santa Clara."
