Should Jamie Soward be selected for State of Origin I?

Mercury sports reporters Michael Cox and Joel Ritchie debate whether NSW selectors should pick Dragons five-eighth Jamie Soward for State of Origin I game. Have your say below.

MICHAEL COX

The time is right for the inclusion of in-form Dragons five-eighth Jamie Soward in the NSW Origin side.

Facing their fourth straight series defeat, NSW needs an injection of energy and creativity.

Soward has been on fire for St George Illawarra. His 21-point haul against the Roosters on ANZAC Day was the season's most dominant individual performance.

Although Soward was overlooked for last week's 40-man preliminary squad and is believed to be on the outer with NSW selectors, he still has three games to prove his worth before teams are named for Origin I.

It seems Soward, a star in the lower grades at the Roosters who had seemingly lost his way, only needed a coach to have faith in him and a dominant forward pack to work behind.

With his sweet left boot, deft passing and dynamic quickness, Soward could provide a point of difference for a NSW side desperately in need of change.

The Blues need to start planning for the future and blooding 24-year-old Soward would be a great start.

Soward's defence is a concern, but NSW selectors need to roll the dice if they are to avoid the same inevitable result against one of the most powerful Queensland sides of all time.

JOEL RITCHIE:

Form is temporary. Class is permanent.

Jamie Soward's purple patch has been one of the stories in the NRL this season, but to declare the Dragon a candidate for the coveted Blues No 6 jumper is a tad premature.

Yes, Soward was electric on Anzac Day. Yes, he was one of the few stand-outs in the Red V against Newcastle. Yes, he was man of the match in Benny's triumphant Brisbane return.

But despite all that, the NSW selectors couldn't find a spot for him in the 40-man preliminary squad named last week.

Despite the selectors' insistence that those outside the 40 are still in contention, it seems the pivot for Origin I is in the squad - Canberra's Terry Campese, Penrith's Luke Lewis and Souths' John Sutton are the main candidates.

No room for Soward. Seems the selectors want to see more from Wagga Kangaroos junior before entrusting him with a Blue jumper.

Remember this is the bloke who was pilloried after being pushed aside by Melbourne's Greg Inglis - a player he would surely cross paths with again in Origin - in round one.

This is the same guy who was dropped for journeyman Ben Rogers before last year's elimination final humiliation.

Soward's kicking game is among the best in the comp and his ability to lay on a try from nowhere is special - but questions still linger about his defence, and Queensland would direct a heap of traffic his way.

Although Soward may not be ready for a Blue jumper, surely he could be included in the CRL team for City-Country on May 8.

That way we could find out if Soward is indeed just on a hot streak or fast becoming one of the most dynamic players going around.

Hi I'm a dedicated Dragons supporter.

I think Jamie Soward has been the in form five-eigth of the comp.

I'm not a one-eyed supporter, just going on form.

He won't do the Blues any harm. If anything I think he will be a bonus.

Time to blood new blood in the Blues team. Give Jamie a go.Big Jas Hall

Soward has been in better form for longer than Terry Campese, Luke Lewis and John Sutton. The latter two are still playing lock when named in the number six. Who was the five-eighth on Friday? Wing or Sutton. It was Wing. The real issue is why Barrett is being considered for Country, when he has played poorly. Poorer than when he was released by the Dragons in 2006. All it means is that the Dragons will continue to win and put a gap on other NSW teams.

How can you select on class? Thats obviously whats been happening the last few years and the blues have been getting smacked! Big names DOES NOT = Good play. Soward is in top notch form, give him the 6. He has shown hes the best in the NRL, so why not let him prove it beyond a doubt. As for Campese, jeez, he cant even direct the hapless Raiders about the field and you want to give him the job for the state team!?

form wins matches, not names

Stick soward in at 5/8 and as long as he's got a guard dog (like Tony Carroll did for Lockyer for years) he will more than hold his own in Origin - a meat axe like Paul Gallen or Luke O'Donnell would do the job nicely!

I'd love for the selectors to pick Jamie at half back with Terry Campese at 5/8. Campese plays as a first receiver with Canberra handling the ball 3 or 4 times in each set, this would give Jamie more of a 5/8 roll in attack so he can choose his moments to chime in. There are plenty of guys who will be in the team who can 'protect' Jamie in defence (I don't think his defence is as bad as people are making out). I think his attack and blistering speed could just be what NSW need. Give him a go.

DON'T DARE PICK HIM... I WANT HIM PLAYING FOR THE DRAGONS WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT. NOT GETTING SMASHED IN THE STATE ARENA! (YES I AM SELFISH) BUT I JUST WANT THE DRAGONS TO WIN.....

all you one eyed St.George Illawarra supporters are kidding yourselves. i agree, he is playing well, but for origin? you've got to be kidding. 5 people better than him. unless there is a flurry of injuries this weekend, a breakout of swine flu and a mental breakdown of the selectors, he hasnt got a chance. and im being objective about it.

Soward's form has been a revelation and proves that all some players need is for someone to believe in them.

However it remains to be seen if his form can continue on the NRL stage and more importantly I have doubts on his ability to step up and dominate on the game's biggest stage.

It takes a very special player to dominate the game from the halves (Johns, Fittler, Lewis, Lockyer, Thurston) and more often than not with the assistance of a dominant forward pack, which NSW probably will not have.
