Training pays off for Robert Hurley in Stockholm

Stockholm again proved to be a wonderful place to race, writes Wollongong swimmer Robert Hurley.

Well my first stop of the World Cup series in Stockholm was an eventful one, not only for myself but for everyone who participated.

Stockholm again proved to be a wonderful place to race, with packed stands and autograph-hungry kids making the locals there almost as passionate as some Aussie crowds.

The electric atmosphere, especially when a world record was broken or a Swede was racing, created enough warmth to forget about the zero degree temperatures outside.

An incredible nine world records were broken in the two days of competition and many Olympic champions and world record holders, including Michael Phelps, were missing the cut to swim in finals as the heats were the fastest in history.

My campaign started with an Australian Record in the 100m Backstroke heats, which qualified me 3rd for the final. I swam slightly slower in the finals that evening, finishing 5th.

I doubled up that night to also swim in the 400m Freestyle, not an easy race to swim when you are already fatigued.

I paced it well, finishing fast to grab 2nd place in a PB time, which jumps me up to be the third fastest Australian of all-time, behind the names of Hackett and Thorpe, which I'm absolutely stoked with.

The following day I placed 8th in both the 50m and 200m Backstroke finals, only slightly off my personal best times.

Swimming two PB's at this meet was a great confidence boost for me as it showed that my dedication and hard training back in Wollongong is paying off.

With two stops to go, the plan is to start racing more Freestyle, and I'm expecting some real tough competition in Berlin with world champions Phelps, Biedermann and Mellouli all expected to be racing.
