Have I missed something in this whole Brad Fittler saga?
As far as I'm aware, the guy got drunk and ended up on the wrong floor knocking on what he mistakenly thought was his room.
Oh yeah, he wasn't wearing a shirt either.
As far as I'm concerned it's a pretty trivial incident. He didn't punch a sponsor, didn't sexually assault anyone, didn't drive drunk. In fact, from what I can tell he broke absolutely no law at all.
Read more Try Hard blogs I'd be willing to bet that, if he'd done exactly the same thing while sober it wouldn't have rated a mention. It'd just be an honest mistake.
Well, it's still an honest mistake. But because he was drunk when he made it, it's suddenly news and everyone seems to be banging on as though he's broken the law. (In fact, from what I understand, the hotel in question is shaped like a cylinder and the reception is on the third floor - sounds like getting lost in there would be easy for a sober person too).
But, jeez, if being drunk is a crime then they'd better start building a hell of a lot more jails. If being drunk justifies acres of coverage in the media then I'd bet an awful lot of us should be seeing our names in the papers or hearing them on TV sometime soon.
As a fan I'm sick of reading about every single minute indiscretion a player - or coach - commits. And they all seem to get the same coverage, regardless of how big or small their transgressions really are.
So what I'd really like is for everyone to take a deep breath and please get a sense of perspective.
What Fittler did is not (I repeat NOT) a big deal.
Neither was Willie Mason relieving himself on a wall. I don't usually have much sympathy for Mason but, in the wake of that incident I did. And the same goes for the two Storm players caught doing the same thing.
Really, there are enough serious issues surrounding rugby league already without everyone trying to beat up trivial incidents into something huge.
So how about we all save the word "scandal" for when something actually is a scandal?
