I had a good Father’s Day yesterday. Got nothing remotely resembling a tool. Which is very good. Giving me a set of tools in the hope that I’ll use them is like giving a bear a nice pen in the hope he’ll develop opposable thumbs and learn to write. It just ain’t going to happen.
Instead, I got some tasty confectionery and headed to Sydney to spend some money at one of my favourite bookstores (Gleebooks in Glebe), go into the Rocks for a nice glass of rosé and then head down the road to the Belgian Beer Café for some slightly overpriced yet still very nice beers.
And then, to put the icing on a great day I also got a minor premiership. Sure, I have to share that with the Dragons players and the fans, but I’m more than happy to do so. I know a minor premiership means precious little to anyone else but I don’t care. It means a lot to me, so I’m pretty damned chuffed we’ve got it two years running.
I also got the gift of watching the Dragons play their best attacking half of footy this season. A little over 20 minutes into the match and it was pretty much all over. Which was surprising for two reasons. Firstly, missing four starters, including halves Jamie Soward and Ben Hornby, I figured we were in for a rough game, but the replacements of Nathan Fien and Kyle Stanley didn’t miss a beat.
The other reason the win was surprising was the way Souths played. I could have sworn there was a finals spot on the line for them but, aside from Sam Burgess, they really didn’t play like it. Which is the biggest question mark with the Bunnies. I rated them this year – and I still think they have a good team. But they’re just missing something – and missing something big. Even with the injuries they had this season, to be fighting for the last finals spot in the final week of the comp is far from good enough.
Another reason to enjoy Father’s Day – Matt Cooper finally got the 100th try he’s been waiting ages for. He’s had at least four “100th” tries disallowed in the latter stages of the season so it was great to see him get it in round 26.
Fox Sports did try to wreck my Father’s Day. For some insane reason, rather than show us the presentation of the JJ Giltinan Shield live, Fox Sports chose to have their panel and commentators blather on about stuff no-one but themselves really cared about. Come on, did anyone not related to commentator Greg Alexander need to see his two kids on TV? No, we didn’t. What us Dragons fans wanted to see was that shield – and we got about 12 seconds of it. None of which was live.
The other good news coming out of Father’s Day is that we dodged a bullet – we don’t have to play the Raiders in the first weekend of the finals. While I did think it would be good for our confidence were we to knock them over in the first round, I was worried about our chances. After all, the last time we beat them Adam and Eve were in the stands watching.
Now, someone else can kick them out while we meet up with the fast-falling Sea Eagles next Sunday.
