You know what annoyed me most about the Dragons’ Friday night’s match against the Storm?
The Channel Nine commentary. It was just so insufferably one-sided and sycophantic towards the Storm. Everything the Storm did was brilliant, they were an awesome, faultless machine, according to Ray Warren and Phil Gould.
Everything the Dragons did was shoddy and they were a hopeless disjointed rabble. Phil Gould in particular seemed to make sure he took every possible chance to lay the boot into the Dragons.
Their greatest praise was saved for Billy Slater - any time he got near the ball Ray Warren and Gould just about collapsed with ecstasy.
It was clear that the commentary team went into the match with preconceived ideas of both teams - ‘‘Storm are great, Dragons are crap’’ - and would stick to that script no matter what.
So to listen to the commentary it sounded like, in the second half, the Storm were smashing the Dragons when, in fact, there was no score in the second half.
Yep, the supposedly crap team kept the awesome Storm scoreless in the second half. But did you hear any mention of that feat in the commentary? Nope. Nor did you hear any mention of the fact that the Dragons are the only team all season to hold the Storm to single digits at their home ground.
As a Dragons fan, I’m immensely pleased with my side. I was fearful that it was going to be a bloodbath but not only did they avoid that, they almost pulled off the unthinkable - beating Melbourne in Melbourne.
All that was needed was one of those left edge passes to Kyle Stanley to stick and we’re over the line.
At the back end, the Storm had us on our line and I was sure we’d crack eventually. But the Red V held firm and repelled the competition leaders time and again. It was a glimmer of the defensive wall that frustrated teams for most of the last three seasons - and it certainly frustrated the Storm.
While I’m stoked with the Dragons effort it’s hard to say for sure if we’ve turned the corner. A few weeks ago we muscled up against the Tigers and then put in an inept display against the Roosters.
So the big test for the Dragons comes next Sunday against the Warriors. If we build on the effort against the Storm then we should nab our first win in ages.
