In a sea of 500 mourners, Kylie Stortz was alone in spirit with her beloved husband yesterday.
As Jason Stortz's coffin left the grounds of Christ Church Kiama, witnesses could only weep at the tragedy of a young woman, widowed too young, saying her final goodbye.
Mr Stortz died last Saturday during a training run for the Port Macquarie Iron Man Challenge, leaving Mrs Stortz and their 15-month-old son Harry.
Pay tribute to Mr Stortz here For a man remembered as humble and self-effacing, the 39-year-old could not have imagined the number of lives he had touched.
Loved ones stood alongside members of the triathlon community, Kiama Municipal Council dignitaries, cycling companions and old friends from his Tuesday night swimming club.
They were greeted by a row of 21st century racing bikes, propped up against the wall of the 160-year-old church.
Mr Stortz's 2008 Port Macquarie Iron Man shirt and medal were displayed alongside his coffin.
His four sisters, Karyn, Joanne, Chantel and Kristy, stood together to remember their brother, sharing childhood memories with mourners who spilled from the church and into a packed, adjoining community hall.
Then followed friend and triathlete Jamie Williams, friend Boyd McCarron and swimming mates Mark Shelton and Bob Kirkbride.
Mr Williams said the enthusiasm of the close-knit triathlon community had waned in the week since Mr Stortz's death.
"There is doubt at the moment as to whether it is all worth the risk. But it will be Jason's legacy of always wanting to ride and race that will keep me and many others out there racing."
Mr McCarron said Mr and Mrs Stortz were "yin and yang - perfectly matched to complement each other."
Kiama council has established an appeal for Mr Stortz's family, with donations payable by calling the council on 4232 0444.
Members of the Kiama Triathlon Club will collect donations during a memorial ride to the crash scene where they will erect a cross and plaque at 9am today.
Gilmore MP Joanna Gash will formally recognise Mr Stortz's life and his 81/2 years service with the Australian Army in Federal Parliament next week.
