The region's youth joined the Catholic Church in presenting a visually stunning event at Saturday night's World Youth Day Commissioning Vigil Mass.
The atmosphere at WIN Entertainment Centre was electric as the 6000-strong congregation revelled in the joyful, religious experience.
Wollongong Bishop Peter Ingham cemented his place as one of the region's most beloved leaders when a member of the crowd called: "Three cheers for Bishop Ingham", to rousing response.
"May I just say how proud I am of the diocese of Wollongong," the Bishop said later.
It was a case of no room at the WIN as residents and pilgrims from more than 20 countries packed the venue, waving national flags in scenes reminiscent of an opening ceremony at the Olympics.
The lights then dimmed to reveal an emotionally moving procession of candles carried by student leaders of the diocese's Catholic schools, together with a replica of the WYD cross.
The 100-member WYD band and choir delivered hymns as, overhead, images of the journey of the WYD cross and icons were flashed on two large screens, showcasing the joy of the event and the beauty of the region.
The visual spectacle continued as eight bishops in vestments, including Bishop Ingham, joined the procession - watched by more than 70 priests from throughout the world who took their place alongside the stage.
Didgeridoo player Richard Campbell welcomed the gathering and young dancers, wearing hues of yellow, orange and beige, told the Gospel story of the sower, the seed and the soil, and the importance of spreading the news of Christ.
Bishop Ingham issued "100,000 welcomes" to the congregation at "a very important time in the story of our Church and the story of our diocese".
In his youth-directed homily, he said millions of people throughout the centuries had undertaken pilgrimages of faith.
"Pilgrimage has always been part fun, part hard work, the usual pilgrim mix of pain and pleasure, of joy and sorrow," he said.
"World Youth Day may be comparatively a small journey, but it has great power.
"... All of us, no matter our age, are looking for something to satisfy, not just for the moment, but to satisfy us deep down, and special events like World Youth Day can help us to pass on the values that young people are going to want for your lives.
"... The Church wants you young people to realise that it's awesome to have such values, it is cool to pray and to be in touch with God," he said.
The WYD pilgrims were commissioned and blessed for the journey ahead. A spirit of buoyancy and happiness reigned as the congregation left the venue.
"What a beautiful experience," said Marcene Currey, enrolment co-ordinator at Holy Spirit College.
Yesterday, Bishop Ingham described the Mass and numbers there as absolutely overwhelming: "It was an atmosphere of prayer and devotion, of joy and hope."
