Accused pair may face new charges over alleged gang rape

14 Oct, 2008 04:00 AM
Two men accused of gang raping a woman after she left the Glasshouse Tavern last year may face alternative charges, Wollongong District Court heard yesterday.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has provided Aleksandar Paravinja and Edward Power Simeon's lawyers with alternative charges to consider over the coming weeks.

The 19-year-olds were charged with aggravated sexual assault in company in August last year after an attack on July 14, which left a woman with injuries doctors described as horrific.

Power Simeon was also charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm.

The pair were expected to enter pleas in court yesterday but are now due to be arraigned on November 17.

The Crown prosecutor said the charges had yet to be finalised and he had only given defence lawyers the alternative charge options yesterday.

Power Simeon, of Gaynor Ave, Mt Ousley, is in custody after breaching bail conditions.

Paravinja, of Waldron St, Mt St Thomas, attended court with his family.

Judge Paul Conlon set a tentative trial date of March 2. The matter was adjourned until November 17.
