Aldi supermarket plan for Woonona canned

Aldi supermarket plan for Woonona canned

20 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
An Aldi store proposed for Woonona has been rejected by Wollongong City Council.

The store, proposed for a site next to the historic Bulli courthouse and police station, was refused under delegated authority on five grounds, namely heritage and stormwater concerns.

Plans for the two-storey supermarket and a retail shop at the corner of the Princes Hwy and Hopetoun St were unveiled in August last year - just weeks after the proposal for a Woolworths supermarket at Bulli was placed on exhibition.

  • VOTE IN POLL: Should the Woonona Aldi have gone ahead?

A decision on the Woolworths application by the council is still pending.

It would be the second supermarket in Woonona-Bulli, alongside Franklins.

The plans prompted concern from northern retailers, who felt threatened by having two rival chains within 1km of each other.

The former Bulli police station and courthouse, which have heritage status under the Local Environmental Plan (LEP), would have been refurbished.

But council planners said the plan was inconsistent with the LEP due to its close proximity to the buildings.

It also had inadequate stormwater management and disposal of stormwater.

Meantime, Target has confirmed it is interested in bringing a second store to the Illawarra, but would not say whether it might be at the $95 million Corrimal shopping centre proposed by Valad Property Group.

Plans for the shopping centre project are up in the air, with Wollongong council awaiting revised plans and Valad yet to confirm its future intentions.

warrawong berkeley areas are screaming for an aldi store, they would make a huge fortune in this area & make a lot of customers happy. there is already an aldi in the northern suburbs at fairy meadow, & one in the southern suburbs at shellharbour, but none in the middle.

What about the Aldi store at Wollongong

What a great decision by our much maligned council, we certainly don't need Aldi or a Woolies in the northern suburbs, Corrimal has a Woolies and there is a huge makeover planned for Corrimal. There is already 2 supermarkets in Woonona & Thirroul, 99.9% of people drive to grocery shop so driving to Corrimal (or the bus) is no drama with the northern distributor now extended to Bulli. Aldi should be avoided as it is not an Australian company.

Lyn Fairy Meadow is hardly the northern suburbs! It is essentially Wollongong. Aldi would be great for us northerners. Can't wait until we can have a council again, where we vote in the people who will listen to us.

@ MM: Aldi might not be an Australian company but most of their products are made in Australia. Can Woolworths claim that? @ Lyn: Warrawong is definitely screaming out for an Aldi. It would be a perfect location, yes it would make a fortune there!

Would love to have an Aldi in Unanderra or Berkeley! Not that getting to Dapto is a big issue but everyone wants something closer to them right? I didn't actually know Franklins existed anymore to be honest. I know Aldi isn't an Australian company, but Dick Smith claims to be Australian, and his products these days are about as Australian as Suzuki.

I look at it this way. the more supermarkets in your area the better, more competition means lower prices instead of the same two being Woollies & Coles having the monopoly. Also it would mean more jobs for the people in that area. Aldis gets my vote every time. Shame on you Wollongong Council!! I bet Woollies gets the go ahead though....
