Angry concert-goers hit with fines

17 Dec, 2008 05:21 PM
Only the Big Red Car was exempt from the letter of the law in Wollongong yesterday when more than 100 Wiggles concert-goers were slapped with parking fines.

As more than 3000 fans swung to the tunes of Australia's most popular children's entertainers, Wollongong City Council parking rangers were moving to a different beat outside WIN Entertainment Centre.

Scores of cars parked illegally on the grass that lined marked parking spots on Marine Dr were soon adorned with the telltale manilla envelope.

A second batch of fines followed when the afternoon show's capacity crowd again caused assigned parking areas to overflow.

By day's end, more than 100 fines had been issued.

Parents Wiggly-wooed by the familiar spectrum of skivvies could see only red once outside.

"This is one of the main venues (in Wollongong) and there's nowhere to park. You can't expect a child to walk kilometres," Albion Park Rail grandmother Rozalyn Hewitt said.

"It's made it a miserable day.

"It isn't as if money's abundant at this time of year.

"I've got better things to do with my money than pay council for not providing enough parking," Ms Hewitt added.

Parents who had already parted with $30 per concert ticket, plus the cost of merchandise, were fined $81 for the infringement - parking on a path/strip in a built-up area.

"It's a bit unfair considering there's no parking available," said Melissa Webb, who is pregnant with her second child and was carrying her first. "I can't see what harm it's doing parking here."

Visitors to Wollongong were particularly unimpressed.

"We'll never come back here again. It's ridiculous," Mudgee's Michael Blackman said.

"It's a joke because they don't provide adequate parking," said Phil Herbert, of Nowra.

Bowral's Sharon McWilliams was among the fans who arrived early enough to secure a marked parking spot, but said the lack of assigned spaces did not bode well for Wollongong.

Ms McWilliams told the Mercury when touring acts were playing in Wollongong and Canberra she elected to attend the latter, despite the decision adding an hour to her trip, because she knew once there she would get a parking spot.

A spokesman for Wollongong City Council said the council enforced the Australian road rules, which protect road, pedestrian and public safety.

The council's recent inner city parking strategy discussion paper suggested introducing parking meters and 1700 charged off-street parking spaces to cope with the 6000 extra people expected to live in the area by 2026.

I agree with the angry parents.

Think the council have no idea how pathetic the parking is at Wollongong city. I refuse to bother going to the WEC due to the amount of trouble it is to find a park, I simply take my children to the Acer Arena in Sydney to see any and all concerts as they have an understanding of the amount of people that are expected to use the venue.

Wollongong city beach has nothing to offer tourists either. there is one cafe or two at the beach, no shops for locals or visitors.

You have to drive to town or walk 15 min to get to any shops and at the WEC the rest park they have is a waste of space that no one uses.

I think our council should take a look at QLD and other places and make it a fun and exciting place to go to and visit.

Instead of bringing people to Wollongong they push people away due to the blandness of it.

"Only the Big Red Car was exempt ..." Actually there was one other. At around 2:15pm the ranger's car in the photo, AL39AS was also illegally parked on the grass strip opposite the Marine Drive City Beach Function Centre.

The hypocrisy lost on the rangers who eagerly went about their business of booking motorists doing the same thing.

Clearly a case of “do as I say not do as I do”.

Was the parking revenue really worth the negative publicity for Wollongong?

It's pretty simple really. If you don't want to get a parking ticket, then don't park illegally.

I agree with Glen. There is a pretty simple way to avoid tickets. They are not handed out randomly!

if council provided enough parking (as they should) they would lose too much in revenue.

Imagine that, no more overseas junkets!

You do the crime - you pay the fine. The council is there to service the whole community.

We want our parks and nature strips kept in good condition. 4000 other cars found legal spots, why couldn't the lazy 100 look a bit harder.

Wake up, you pack of whingers.

"This is one of the main venues (in Wollongong) and there's nowhere to park. You can't expect a child to walk kilometres," Albion Park Rail grandmother Rozalyn Hewitt said. " Well, we all know that!

It was stupid to put a venue like that where it is with inadequate parking ... and they are still rabbiting on about extending the football bit.

I have been to the WEC/Staduim several hundred times. Not one parking fine.

I wonder how many of the fined Wiggles fans left no time to give themelves other options.

Im a grandmother of 3 children which attended the concert yesterday.

I travelled from Campbelltown only to find that there was no parking available after driving around for half an hour in the heat. I did park on the grass area up near the lighthouse and walked.

And as for Andrew's comment there was more than 100 of us lazy who did look harder.

For such a big venue I think that Wollongong Council need to make available enough parking to accomodate the people attending.

Also: I attended the last Wiggles concert and parked in exactly the same spot and did not get a ticket that day.

Yesterday must have been just revenue raising for the council.

To place an entertainment venue in a city and not provide adequate 'near site parking' is terrible. The NFL stadiums in the US, the EPL venues in the UK all offer large parking areas nearby... even the SFS and SCG offer parking.

Maybe we should all 'throw our legs in the air' to see if we can get more parking spaces in town?!
