Armed robber on the run

03 Feb, 2012 01:59 PM
Police are hunting an armed robber who escaped from a prison in Goulburn this afternoon before allegedly carjacking an elderly couple.

Mark Maukau, 23, was reported missing following a roll call at the Goulburn Correctional Centre about 12.30pm.

Just minutes earlier, an elderly couple were confronted by a man wielding a screwdriver, who then stole their grey 2011-model Mazda 3 sedan, with NSW registration CDY-82G.

Police believe Maukau is responsible for the carjacking and may be headed for western Sydney.

He was serving a two-year sentence for armed robbery and was due to be released in April next year.

Police have warned the public not to approach Maukau, who is described as Maori/Pacific Islander in appearance, 172cm tall with a medium build, but instead contact Triple-0 immediately if they see him.

Information can also be called through to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
