Baby put up for adoption on Gumtree website

07 May, 2009 02:08 PM
A South Coast father has apparently put his one-year-old daughter up for adoption on the classifieds website Gumtree following his wife's death.

A smiling baby girl is pictured on the advertisement which was placed on the popular website on Tuesday.

The price tag listed next to baby is "free".

  • Online ad for baby's adoption is a hoax, police believe

"I am seeking a loving and caring family to adopt our 1year old daughter, her mother passed away and it been very difficult for more (sic) to provide her with the all the attention, care and love she deserves," the advertisement states.

The baby is listed on the site between a Kelvinator fridge/freezer and a Samsung top loading washing machine, on a page entitled "General stuff for sale and wanted in Sydney".

The advertisement still appears on the website's contents page, however readers are now unable to click through to find out further details.

The same advertisement has been posted in a separate pregnancy chatroom, and one person has replied, offering a "safe, loving home for your child".

Lake Illawarra police have been alerted about the advertisement.

Comment is also being sought from the Department of Community Services.

    More information to follow.

    It must be a hoax

Clearly this father is grieving and overwhelmed with the task of full time parenthood- grief makes people do silly things! Perhaps when DOCS look into the matter rather than take his child away they could organize support and counseling for him and his child so that the task becomes easier.

Clearly this man is not thinking straight. Sounds like a cry for help.

I don't think that many men are up to the task of parenting as well as holding down a full time job. Many people in that situation would have a grandparent care for the child but that's not an option for many. If that's the way he feels then he should have the choice to put the child up for adoption so she can grow up in a happy family setting.

i agree with all of the above. this man is not a bad person, and the last thing he or the child need is a trial by media or a media driven smear campaign. its not a perfect world for everyone! i wish the whole family luck.

This man's action is unforgivable. This is your kid! No matter what happened she is your girl. You cannot just dump her away and even you SHOULD NOT have thought about it this way. Today you cried for a help. Tomorrow you might dump her on the street straight away.

this add doesn't sound right may be wife didn't die, father trying to get back at childs mother due to relation ship breakdown or maybe mother left him holding a child and this now cramps his style seen this before one minute wants to be a father next minute doesn't as this cuts into his drinking time with mates some people just cant handle responsability these days. or he may be a father needing help but this is not the way to go im sure there would be family of friends he could turn to for support .
