Backing for Jones over same-sex marriages

30 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
A Union heavyweight has taken a swipe at efforts to destabilise Throsby MP Stephen Jones ahead of his historic private member's bill to legalise same-sex marriage.

Australian Workers' Union (AWU) branch secretary Andy Gillespie yesterday said the "vast majority" of unions supported Mr Jones' stance on same-sex marriage.

He said he believed elements of the Labor Party were using the issue to try to undermine Mr Jones.

"That's not what this debate should be about - it is about fairness and applying the law fairly," Mr Gillespie said.

"Stephen is not isolated in the community and he is not going to be isolated on this issue."

In a veiled swipe at Wollongong MP Noreen Hay, Mr Gillespie said some in the the Labor Party were trying to use the issue to erode Mr Jones' support.

In December, Ms Hay introduced a successful internal party motion attacking Mr Jones' position by highlighting that marriage was between a man and a woman.

"If people want to turn this into a party-room brawl for political ends, it would be a shame to see that happen, that people would try and factionalise the issue for political purposes," Mr Gillespie said.

A 2010 study found support for same-sex marriage was split in Mr Jones' seat of Throsby, with 40 per cent for and against and 20 per cent undecided.

Same-sex marriage advocates are worried about support for Mr Jones' stance in the region.

Peak lobby group Marriage Equality Australia will hold a meeting in Wollongong next month to bolster support for the MP.

Mr Jones is expected to introduce his private member's bill later this year.

Meantime, Attorney-General Nicola Roxon has cleared the path for Australian same-sex couples to wed overseas in countries where it is already legal.

Under the change, same-sex couples will be able to apply for a Certificate of No Impediment, required by overseas governments before they allow a marriage to take place.

Since when is Andy Gillespie "a Union heavyweight"? flyweight at best & why is he now coming out of the woodwork to add to the one side discussion of allowing homosexuals to legally marry? Obviously he hasn't got enough to do with his own work with Bluescope taking the load off him & therefore allows him time to prop up the insipid & useless Local Member of Throsby. Obviously the Labor Party is not seeing this issue in a unified manner , but him sticking the Unions nose into this issue is questionable. He is employed to further his members work conditions, not his own agenda, butt out Andy.

Mr Gillespie, the vast silent majority of Australians, including many of your union members, do not support gay marriage and a further erosion of the very foundations of our community. Nor do we take kindly to attempts by the gay lobby to silence our religious leaders or others who speak out against gay marriage through a well orchestrated campaign of vilification, intimidation and abuse. We wait till the time when we will make our feelings known loud and clear at the ballot box and those who have jumped on this gay marriage band wagon will come to a mighty crash.

Well said Mr Gillespie. How dare Ms Hay pretend to take the high moral ground on the issue of marriage equality for her own political purposes. Ms Hay must have someone in mind for the seat of Throsby.

I support Stephen Jones proposed bill to legalise gay marriage and he is not isolated in this matter. Citizens in this region are very fortunate to have someone of Jones" stature to represent them in Federal Parliament.

Ad hominem argument - so appropriate in this context!

It's interesting that Grumpyoldfart accuses the gay lobby of abuse when we have a so called 'religious leader' like Margaret Court over the weekend saying that homosexuality is as a result of child abuse. Is this not vilification, intimidation and abuse? It's yet another desperate campaign from a fading institution that is in effect solely responsible for its own destruction. It is disgusting and shameful for the community to have to continually put up with such intolerable and ill-informed garbage.

Well said Johne. It would be interesting to compare the local AWU's union membership in 1995 to now. And hasn't the union movement got much bigger issues on their hands - like protecting Australian jobs (which they've been very unsuccessful at) and ensuring that some of our foundation industries aren't placed on the scrap-heap (which they are also failing at). As for Jones and Hay - I would think there are many more critical issues to deal with. The Labor party and the union movement has lost its way - which is truly a great shame. Ben Chifley would be devastated with this mob.

How can Noreen stand for marriage when she publicly chooses to identify as single by using Ms instead of Mrs? Is there another motive for this opposition, a preferred candidate or thinking of moving to Canberra herself.

Labors new mantra, keep Illawarra in the 60's.

@ Grumpoldfart

I have no idea if you're just trolling but i'll bite.

I don't know if I should feel angry or pitiful at/for you. Say I live on the other side of the country and get married to another man how does that further create erosion in the community?

As for saying the religious leaders are "silenced" by the gay lobby I laugh, believing in a magical sky daddy is more odd than thinking two people of the same sex can love each other.
