Be prepared for 2013

14 Jan, 2010 02:39 PM
It was a passing of the torch of sorts at the 22nd Australian Jamboree yesterday.

While NSW and Queensland have often found themselves at odds - particularly when it comes to sporting prowess - there was no animosity to be found at Appin's Cataract Scout Park as AJ2010 camp director Bob Baker handed over responsibility for planning the largest gathering of scouts in the country to Queensland contingent leader and AJ2013 camp director Pieter Van Der Kamp.

Mr Van Der Kamp, a scout of 25 years, said planning was already well under way for the next Australian Jamboree, to be held at Maryborough, north of Brisbane, in 2013.

"There's a lot of work to do, but it's all starting to come together," he said.

He had nothing but praise for his predecessor.

"You've just got to look at the kids - they're the telling factor," he said.

For the outgoing camp director, it was a chance to look back on a mammoth logistical challenge involving more than 13,000 scouts and leaders, hundreds of volunteers and staff and more than a million volunteer hours of work.

"I've had an excellent team helping me - everyone's really chipped in and done a great job," he said.

A gusty and dusty day didn't stop scouts getting out and about as they enjoyed the second last day of the 11-day jamboree yesterday, albeit with clothes that revealed just how averse some had been to a little laundry duty.

Strong winds even gave a handy push to a few flagging scouts as they battled through a gruelling endurance course in the forest surrounding Cataract Park.
