Bellambi residents will today be given a preview of a $400,000 project that will save their cracking and crumbling pool and make it a jewel on the northern suburbs' coastline.
The Bellambi Rock Pool was constructed over a natural rock shelf but movement in the shelf has created large cracks in the pool's concrete slabs, making the pool unsafe.
Next month, the council will start demolishing the wading pool, restoring the rock shelf and repairing the concrete concourse. The embankment will also be reshaped and reinforced to stabilise the foreshore and remove a dangerous drop to the beach below.
Today, residents can discuss the project at a community kiosk at the pool from 10.30am to noon. The kiosk is also a chance to comment on proposed dog off-leash areas on beaches.
The pool restoration comes more than seven years after Keira MP David Campbell and the Bellambi Residents Association first raised the unsafe and deteriorating state of the pool. At that time, a report from the council's insurer recommended the toddlers pool be filled in and the main pool be converted to a 30m lap pool.
Council's director of works and infrastructure Peter Kofod said the Bellambi Rock Pool had been part of the "infrastructure maintenance backlog for a number of years". It was flagged as a major project in the council's $53 million infrastructure budget for 2009-10.
"The project at Bellambi is expected to take three months and when complete, the community will be able to enjoy an improved facility that is much more safe and enjoyable," Mr Kofod said.
The council's general manager David Farmer told the Mercury recently that the rock pool - and Wollongong Town Hall - were basically "mothballed" before his arrival in Wollongong and he was pleased they could be saved.
The site will be fenced off and the pool closed during the construction period.
