Bishop joins grant attack

21/11/2008 4:00:00 AM
The Federal Opposition has escalated its attack over Wollongong City Council's $2.15 million funding grant, claiming it sends the wrong message to other councils across the country.

Opposition Deputy Leader Julie Bishop sharpened the Opposition's assault on the Rudd government's $300 million stimulus package using Wollongong as an example to illustrate that money was distributed unfairly.

In two media interviews Ms Bishop suggested Wollongong's corruption scandal should have been taken into account when funding allocations were made.

"Wollongong City Council received the single largest allocation," she said. "I mean, what sort of message does that send to local governments about how to conduct their councils and about how to undertake appropriate reforms?"

Yesterday morning she said: "One of the biggest winners was the Wollongong City Council that received the single largest allocation in NSW, yet we all know the Wollongong City Council was sacked following a corruption scandal and you have to ask, well what kind of message is that sending to local councils about reform?"

The comments come a day after federal Opposition spokesman for local government, Scott Morrison described Wollongong City Council as "arguably the most spectacularly failed council" and said the $2.15 million grant was a "reward for incompetence".

Ms Bishop's comments drew a swift rebuke from Member for Cunningham Sharon Bird.

"Julie Bishop and Scott Morrison are deliberately targeting the people of Wollongong for punishment," she said. "This city and its people are trying to rebuild after the ICAC investigation, we don't need continual unwarranted attacks by the Liberal Party."

Ms Bishop did not answer the Mercury's questions yesterday and Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull did not return the Mercury's calls.

Yesterday, Mr Morrison said in a letter that he did not begrudge Wollongong the $2.15 million grant, and said his comments were not intended as an attack on the region. "If taxpayers' money is being handed out, then you should expect those who are spending it on your behalf to be at the top of their game," he said.

What is it with these politicians? Don't the people come first?

Pointscoring will do them no favours. Why punish the passengers on a sinking ship for what the captain did?

This idiotic attack by the Opposition, shows they wouldn't have helped the people of Wollongong if they were still in power.

As for Morrison, now he doesn't begrudge the money in what almost seems like an apology for opening his big mouth before engaging brain.

How dare Julie Bishop claim that we should suffer for the sins of the council.

Why should we lose funding for critical infrastructure?

Was it our fault some in the council were corrupt? How long does she suggest we should be punished?

Julie Bishop must make a public apology to the people of Wollongong.

This is a disgraceful statement.

Why should the community be subjected to this form of criticism just because of the action of a small number of councillors and developers.

Once again, the people of Wollongong are being labelled.

We weren't the corrupt ones.

We voted and put trust in our council to work for us (not themselves).

We voted for State and Federal Governments as well but we do not always get the things required for this area and when we do, pollies claim we don't deserve it.

Why? because the people we trust could be corrupt.

What about those in the share market, where all our hard earned money has dissapeared.

It is always the hard workers who pay in the end.

We all know Julie Bishop would give the whole $300m to the Vaucluse and Rose Bay areas.

Fair trading should disallow her party using the title "Liberal" it must confuse migrants into voting for the wrong dudes.

I thought the church was putting its oar in when I read the headline. But it was actually Julie Bishop. Whatever happened to the other Bishop? Bronwyn wasn't it?
