Blue Mile gets green thumbs up

Wollongong's Blue Mile project has been given a green thumbs up.

The multimillion-dollar revitalisation of the city's foreshore has been underway for more than 18 months and work is moving full steam ahead.

Visitors to Belmore Basin are already enjoying the benefits of the project, including new playground equipment, an amphitheatre and a viewing platform.

The master plan for the project scored a Local Government award at the NSW Coastal Conference in Ballina earlier this month.

The award recognises councils that have demonstrated ecologically sustainable development practices in coastal areas.

Wollongong City Council administrator Col Gellatly said Wollongong's submission stood out because of strong community involvement.

"The Blue Mile project has been extremely popular with the community and it's great to see council's hard work acknowledged by industry professionals," he said.

Work on the latest stage of the project began in September and is due for completion by Christmas.

When completed, it will feature a 3m-wide promenade along Cliff Rd between Belmore Basin and North Wollongong Beach, and viewing platforms to take in ocean vistas.

Council administrators this week awarded a tender for the final stage of the Cliff Rd pathway, which will reach from Georges Place to the Novotel Northbeach, passing above the Continental Pool and North Beach Bathers' Pavilion.

Construction is due to begin in January after a Christmas break and will kick off stage two of the Blue Mile project.

Stage two is due to be completed by next July, to meet a Federal Government deadline that accompanied $2.9 million for the project under the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.

When are we going to see walkways and cycleways constructed between town centres and existing cycleways? Corrimal town centre for example? All Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program appears to be occurring in Wollongong city and CBD with no funding reaching the suburbs. Wollongong starts at Helensburgh and finishes at Windang/Yallah in the south... does it not? Infrastructure in this city must be improved in order for it to move forward and grow as a City.

Recently i visited gosford, around terrigle and avoca along there foreshore they have cafes ,restraunts, pubs and parks, wollongong is slowly catching on but a long way behind, its seems these minority groups rant and rave and stop these things being built , wcc are slowly doing the correct thing and building these things, good work, ignore the minority and make wollongong a fun vibrant place .

Great idea spag, but just where do the patrons of all these new cafes, pubs etc park? There are already about 15 places where you can get food and drink between the Brewery and the Lagoon, so how many more do you want. Can't we just have some open space and let people enjoy the natural beauty and scenery instead of turning the area into Gold Coast or Darling Harbour. Go down to Brighton Beach and see the families enjoying a swim and a picnic on the grass. They don't need any more commercial developments - they just enjoy the open space.

You know, for sure. I mean....this is just.......you know for sure. Everybody did a great job during the season, the builders did an excellent job and we will see how we progress and hopefully add some quality to the area......for sure.
