BlueScope Steel's $20m Navy destroyer deal

11 May, 2009 05:01 PM
BlueScope Steel has won a $20 million contract to supply steel for three new Navy destroyers.

On his first visit to the Illawarra as Prime Minister today, Kevin Rudd announced that BlueScope Steel had won the contract to supply steel to the Air Warfare Destroyer Program.

Mr Rudd was joined by Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon to make the announcement at the Port Kembla steelworks.

The commitment to build three Hobart class air warfare destroyers was announced in the defence white paper last week.

"BlueScope Steel is an Australian company with a proud and long heritage and has beaten the world to win the contract to supply steel to the air warfare destroyer project,'' Mr Rudd said.

"It will support jobs in the Illawarra.

"This is Australian steel for Australian ships for Australia's defence. That's what we're here today to celebrate."

Mr Rudd said 3000 tonnes of Port Kembla steel would be used in each ship.

The destroyers will be the most advanced ships to be operated by the Navy, and will be commissioned between 2014 and 2017.

Mr Rudd said BlueScope had indicated it welcomed the government's announcement of a slower start to the emissions trading scheme, which was now due to start in July 2011 instead of a year earlier.

"The government has great confidence in the industry's future and the company's future,'' he said.

"We'll continue to work through a range of issues with the company.''

After making the BlueScope announcement, Mr Rudd chaired a jobs forum in Wollongong Town Hall.

What a disappointment. A $300 BILLION defence reform package and only $20 MILLION for the Illawarra. Another example of the Labor Party taking NSW for granted!

20 million in our pockets is far better than the govenment paying for and sourcing the manufactured steel from overseas. Lets hope this continues on other infrastructure spending and it is only the beginning of a good relationship between our government & the manufacturing sector here in Australia

This is great news for our steel industry, but I don't understand what this will mean in terms of jobs? If I'm unemployed and not a steelworker how does this address my future prospects for employment? Can the Mercury give us some in depth analysis as to what this will mean for the region.

I didn't vote Labor so we could spend a third of a trillion dollars on guns, bombs and boats. $20 million of steel for the navy? Better than nothing. But a REAL Labor infrastructure project would be more like "$20 Billion of Illawarra steel, engineers and workers to create a fast rail triangle between Wollongong, Sydney and Canberra". Now THAT would be an announcement.

$20million to protect steel jobs in the Illawarra, an industry on which we are so reliant, I say well done and thank you! The workers and their families, who will deliver this 9000 tonne of steel, are sure to be equally thankful that a Labor Prime Minister took the time to personally come to Wollongong and deliver this good news on protecting local jobs. Thank you Kevin!

Good news yes, but lets not get too excited. The 9000 tonnes represents about 1/2 a days production spread over several years, so in protecting steel jobs..........he has committed to a couple of hrs production a year for a couple of years. Better than nothing, but just barely.

Thanks Pierre that puts the 'jobs summit' in perspective. Not much hope for the unemployed in the region in that context.

it's about time the region stops voting for labor. he came all the way down here to announce $20 million of bluescope steel. how about something that will have a lasting effect on employment in this region. how long can this region be taken for granted by labor?

$20 million to protect steel jobs in the Illawarra?!? Bluescope at full capacity makes over 15000 tonnes of steel per day, at that rate it will keep it running for an extra 15 hours. Another great political annoucement that will really "secure our future". Thank you Kevin :-(

Its no use whinging about the Labor Government, they keep getting elected!!! Its the same as when a cop gives a hoodlum a smack under the lug, they get crucified. The result is the people get the soft police force they ask for! Put up with it now, or do something about it!!!
