Bumper crowd for Camp Quality Convoy

Bumper crowd for Camp Quality Convoy

16 Nov, 2009 12:20 PM
Money raised from this year's Camp Quality Convoy for Kids event is expected to exceed $300,000 following a record number of both entries and crowds.

More than 700 trucks and about 500 motorbikes joined yesterday's charity run from Appin to the Croome Rd Sports Complex at Albion Park Rail.

The fundraising total was greatly boosted by MJ Rowles, which bid $70,000 for the right to lead the convoy.

Upon arrival, participants and a crowd numbered in the thousands were entertained by various live acts, headlined by the Australian songstress Vanessa Amorosi.

Camp Quality Illawarra area manager Ann Tanks described the day as "sensational, absolutely fantastic".

"The whole of the Illawarra, the community played a huge part in the success of the convoy which just keeps getting bigger and bigger," she said. "When we came down Appin Rd and we got to the top of Mt Ousley, seeing all the people standing along the roadside, on the bridges and overhead passes and then you look out to the left and you see the ocean and the Illawarra.

"It doesn't get much better than that."

Well done! That $300,000 is much needed...and more of the same. Thanks to the organizers and the participants and expecially M J Rowles for their generous bid. It's events like this that give people a good time, and that warm and fuzzy feeling. Bigger and better next year, eh?

Appalling that the front pages of your newspaper covers a game of golf WHO CARES. Bravo to the truckies who spent days preparing their trucks and donated their limited time off for the event, Bravo to the people who turned out in the thousands. Bravo to the companies and local businesses, Surely this story should have made the front page and not some stupid golf game

I hear that Julie, and the Mercury is supposed to be a local paper with local news. Include the golf by all means ... in the sports pages.

Watching all the bikes and trucks roll past, i got a warm fuzzy feeling thru my body, but towards the end i said to my husband " where is Wollongong City Council? " I thought they be 1 of biggest fleets to come past. Its a shame our own council cant support such a worthy cause.

Wander how much more money would be collected if instead of: using fuel, wearing out roads, wearing tyres, wearing engines, wearing out horns and making quite a few hours miserable for people who had to listen to almost constant noise in some places, money not spent were donated to Camp Quality. Also we would save some fuel that is so expensive and reserves run out. All the Convoy drivers instead of congesting our roads could also go and visit needy children and spend some Quality Time instead of making nuisance of themselves and congestion. (I know not typical comment about this well-meaning initiative)

Well done to all those who donated much needed funds to Camp Quality. And I am so proud of my fiance for taking part in this convoy. Congratulations everyone!

Barry, what a killjoy! It's all about bread and circuses you know. In this case though, the circus brought in the bread. It's only once a year - much needed money was raised and everyone had a good time.

Fergie, I know, not popular view, but instead of mere $300,000, this way few millions could be collected, but instead the rest went out in smoke. (All in the TOUGH TIMES too).

Convoy is one of Illawarra's proudest moments. I am fully of aware of the joy it brings family's that are affected by childhood illnesses. Our god child is one of them, our neice who passed away is another, and their families are supported in such a way that even if camp quality can bring 1 day of joy, their heartfelt support & assistance is one day that changes these peoples lives forever. A day is not where it ends, their support lasts and lasts for years. Without these fund raisers, these organisations would not exist, and that would be a tragedy in itself. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to all involved. Illawarra be proud, the community involvement reminds all of us, of just how supporting one another, does make this world a better place! Barry, you need to pull your head in, for 1/2 a day your inconvenienced, try spending weeks, months, years on end with a very sick child! 1/2 a day of increased traffic is drop in the ocean! You obviously are missing the bigger picture! Good luck with that. And again, WELL DONE i98fm and all the sponsors that make this day happen! It is a beautiful thing.
