Milder weather conditions helped firefighters contain a bushfire in the Morton National Park near Bundanoon yesterday.By last night the fire, started by a lightning strike last Sunday, had burnt out 1200ha of forest.A spokesman for the NSW Rural Fire Service said several aircraft were used to suppress the fire, including dropping retardant lines, to support firefighters on the ground."Heavy plant equipment continues to strengthen and deepen containment lines around the perimeter of the fire," he said."The containment lines along Johnsons Creek, Bundanoon Creek and Caoura Ridge Fire Trail continue to hold."Residents of Bundanoon, Penrose and Wingello were advised to expect some smoke throughout the area over the weekend as backburning took place."People with respiratory conditions should take all appropriate precautions if affected by smoke," the spokesman said."Favourable weather conditions are forecast over the next couple of days and residents should take this opportunity to prepare their homes in the event that severe weather causes the fire to breach containment lines."Wingello State Forest has also been closed to the public until further notice. There are no road closures in the area at present, however motorists have been asked to take appropriate precautions.
