Corrimal residents will get superfast web access via the National Broadband Network and more than 16,000 extra homes in Wollongong and Dapto will be hooked up to the network, the government has announced.
A total of 8300 homes and businesses in Corrimal will receive speeds of at least 100 megabits per second via the $36 billion fibre optic network, with work to start this year.
An extra 2800 premises in Wollongong and an additional 5300 in Dapto will also be plugged into the network, under an updated rollout plan released this morning. The announcement came almost four months after Prime Minister Julia Gillard revealed almost 11,000 homes and businesses in Wollongong and Dapto would get early access to the NBN.
Cunningham MP Sharon Bird and Throsby MP Stephen Jones both hailed the extra fibre connections as a ‘‘fantastic’’ result for the region.
‘‘It’s a fantastic day for the communities in our local area to be connected to this transformational technology, which will change the way we do business, learn and teach, deal with doctors, and develop new skills,’’ Mr Jones said. The government has yet to reveal which streets in each suburb will be connected, with detailed maps to be released from August onwards.
About 2500 homes and businesses in Kiama Downs, Minnamurra and Jamberoo have already been made ‘‘NBN-ready’’, with residents able to sign-up for internet access from a range of providers.
