Corrimal to get NBN access

15 Feb, 2012 10:24 AM
Corrimal residents will get superfast web access via the National Broadband Network and more than 16,000 extra homes in Wollongong and Dapto will be hooked up to the network, the government has announced.

A total of 8300 homes and businesses in Corrimal will receive speeds of at least 100 megabits per second via the $36 billion fibre optic network, with work to start this year.

An extra 2800 premises in Wollongong and an additional 5300 in Dapto will also be plugged into the network, under an updated rollout plan released this morning. The announcement came almost four months after Prime Minister Julia Gillard revealed almost 11,000 homes and businesses in Wollongong and Dapto would get early access to the NBN.

Cunningham MP Sharon Bird and Throsby MP Stephen Jones both hailed the extra fibre connections as a ‘‘fantastic’’ result for the region.

‘‘It’s a fantastic day for the communities in our local area to be connected to this transformational technology, which will change the way we do business, learn and teach, deal with doctors, and develop new skills,’’ Mr Jones said. The government has yet to reveal which streets in each suburb will be connected, with detailed maps to be released from August onwards.

About 2500 homes and businesses in Kiama Downs, Minnamurra and Jamberoo have already been made ‘‘NBN-ready’’, with residents able to sign-up for internet access from a range of providers.

Excellent news. After not getting even ADSL1 for years after it was released due to Telstra's strict testing for 1.5mbit speeds, even if the customer only wanted 512kbps, this is finally some good news for local residents.

When will these customers and businesses actually get the NBN? That'sa the real question we want to read about in the Mercury. This is a totally different issue to "when work commences". What a farce.

Instead of quoting when work SHOULD commence and the number of homes the cable goes past, give us numbers of paying customers. The take-up rate has been pathetic and unviable in every new NBN market opened so far by this government.

Myself and many others will consider moving our businesses there. That is great news.

If the CBD ever wants to make themselves a business hub by jumping the NBN queue I believe this would go a long way to revitalising the Gongs troubled centre.

Oh yeah and get rid of the junkies as well.

@ Jon - if you'd bothered to fully read the story, you would see that detailed maps wont be released for months.

Wany a guess? Figure 6 months after it starts before you can get connected. As for paying customers, your comments just scream luddite to me.

What do you want? Construction to start only when we run out of options?

Our useage has increased 1000% over the past decade, and shows no signs of slowing down. By the time the NBN is fully rolled out, the base technology we see now will be spot on, and technology will had sped up its capabilities for future needs at THAT time.

Do they mean the Corrimal exchange will receive it? Or selected properties within the suburb of Corrimal???

What's that? Wollongong people support upgrades to their internet speed more than gay marriage? What an unlikely turn of events. Hoorah for being a selfish community!

@Gav - I didn't ask for detailed maps! The story simply says work will start "this year" but there is no indication when it will be available.

On the second issue, I will reiterate that the take-up rates in every single NBN market nationally so far have fallen woefully short of their own business plan targets. Prove me wrong on that one, Gav!

Hello from the NBN suburb of Kiama Downs!

You'll love it when you get it!

May I thank our Federal MP's Sharon Bird and Stephen Jones for all the work they have done on assisting Wollongong and now Corrimal move up the priority list for the NBN.

I have my fingers crossed that ALL of Wollongong CBD is included in the map for NBN. It will help attract business, students and other technology based investments. Also - that it is in place before the next Federal election.
