Denying the possibility of local government amalgamation would be like the captain of the Titanic denying there was an iceberg, says Kiama council candidate Brian Petschler.
The former Kiama Council general manager believes the State Government will review the region's boundaries at the end of Wollongong and Shellharbour councils' period of administration in four years.
"It would be silly to think there won't be a section of the Government that will look broadly at the Illawarra," Mr Petschler said. "It may change boundaries just in Shellharbour and Wollongong, it may not, but there will be a review of some sort at State Government level."
It is this stance that has shaped the campaign policies of the Petschler-Fredericks Team, that also comprises incumbent councillor Trevor Fredericks, Bruce Johnston, Perrie Croshaw and Michael Brennan.
Mr Johnston said it was important the municipality was stable and financially strong when the boundary review occurred.
A former chairwoman of Kiama Tourism, Ms Croshaw said the area's neighbours were keen to include Kiama within their boundaries.
"Kiama is seen as the emerald in the South Coast crown, we're the green space ... Wollongong would love to have us and Shoalhaven would give their right arm to have us," she said.
Policies aimed at maintaining the council's financial strength included building on its business models to generate more income, and campaigning for a more reasonable flow of government assistance. Environmental aims included formulating a climate change strategy.
