Council pushes for station lifts

04 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
Wollongong council will lobby the State Government to install lifts at every city train station in a bid to make train travel more accessible for the region's disabled and elderly.

Councillor Michelle Blicavs used this week's council meeting to call for State Government funding to install a lift at Unanderra Railway Station to cater for what she said was a large number of elderly and disabled clients using the platform.

However, the council rejected Cr Blicavs' motion in favour of a stronger stance on the issue of public transport access.

Councillors instead voted to support Greg Petty's amendment, which sought to have lifts installed at all railway stations in Wollongong.

At present only Helensburgh, Thirroul, Bulli, North Wollongong and Wollongong stations are fitted with lifts.

A further 15 stations within the city do not have lifts, and 12 are inaccessible via wheelchair.

Cr Blicavs said Unanderra acted as a transport hub, with at least three retirement villages and aged care facilities located in the immediate area.

She said the former Labor state government had promised lifts as part of a multimillion-dollar upgrade to the station during their term, however residents were still waiting.

"Residents continue to traipse up and down those dilapidated stairs, often carrying bikes and prams," she said.

"I believe it's now time for this council to make strong representations to the State Government, the Minister for Transport and the Minister for the Illawarra to ensure this upgrade is included in the next budget, regardless of cost."

But Cr Petty said the council must press the State Government to commit funds to upgrade all Wollongong stations to make them modern and access-friendly.

The council voted to support Cr Petty's amendment.

A RailCorp spokesman said NSW Transport was reviewing new demographic data to determine the future program for station upgrades.

To be honest, i've never seen a person in a wheelchair catch a train, or even a person with crutches or an inability to walk, and my station is wheelchair accessible.

And the only people i've seen use the lift at Thirroul were people with lots of bags.

coalcliff? wombarra? yes it is a problem for those needing it, but they might need to travel to a hub station first ... many of of us do this anyway owing to the timetables ...

Seems like Councillor Blicavs knows something the rest of us don't. Why would she now want to lobby the State Government, to finish the lift project at Unanderra. Me thinks she is after Brownie points when the Libs announce it will be finally finished in the near future.I think Councillor Petty might have put a spoke in the wheel, when he made an amendment to the proposal, by wanting all railway stations in the area without lifts to also be catered for. If I am wrong, Barry won't be too happy with his golden girl.

Thanks to Michelle and the other Councillors for the continued campaign to improve access. Unanderra has a single platform between the sets of tracks which makes it even more of a priority. A delegation of Unanderra residents and myself had a meeting with Carl Scully back when he was transport minister on this issue. It was proposed by residents that a level crossing to the platform could be a viable alternative. Since then Unanderra has seen growth with the Woolworth redevelopment and the completion of the Villa Maria Age Care Centre.

There is a petition circulating , put out by Noreen Hay, with the hope of getting the 10,000 signatures needed for the Unanderra Lift to be bought to the attention of the Legislative Assembly. Anyone who wants a petition to help get the numbers, should call Noreen's office. I hope she can do something now, because she did very little about it when she had the chance.
