Councillor Vicki Curran eyes seat in Parliament

10 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
Independent Wollongong councillor Vicki Curran is considering setting up her own political party in a bid to take the seat of Wollongong at the next state election.

Buoyed by her election to local government last September, the outspoken councillor now hopes to try her chances at a state level.

‘‘I come from a union background and I want to see workers protected,’’ she said.

‘‘Instead of us having conversations about gay marriage, I want to see the community know about what other decisions are being made, about social justice, about welfare cuts. We are going to have welfare lines outside Woolworths. We are going to have high unemployment and I want the community to know about other issues of social justice.’’

Cr Curran made her name as an anti-corruption campaigner who rose to prominence after accusing then council staffer and ALP heavyweight Joe Scimone of sexual harassment.

Mr Scimone denied the claim. The matter was settled out of court.

Ms Curran was also active in the last state election, helping Wollongong MP Noreen Hay defeat independent Gordon Bradbery at the polls. She has also joined community campaigns by the Greens and offered to help Liberal candidate Michelle Blicavs.

Cr Curran said her support for Ms Hay at the last state election was non-partisan and that she had also offered her support to other female candidates.

‘‘This was not about the party, it was about who would have the intelligence to hit the floor running in Parliament and [Liberal candidate] Michelle and Noreen are both strong advocates for the region,’’ she said, adding she had been encouraged to run for the last council election by Ms Hay.

‘‘Noreen Hay called me and said she was calling me as a female and was encouraging me to run in Ward 3,’’ Cr Curran said.

Ms Hay said while she ‘‘wholeheartedly’’ encouraged Cr Curran to run at the time, she was firmly behind Labor’s Chris Connor.

Go for it, Cr Curran. Maybe then we can get a few questions answered.

It would appear Cr Curran's concerns about the Huntley fiasco are valid too. If the GM can't get the name of the guy right, what else is wrong, including not allowing comments on the article.

Glad to see Vicki Currans definition of "social justice" does not include social justice for gays and gay marriage if her disdain for even mere conversations abut gay marriage reported here are correct. Vicki the sexual harassment legislation you relied upon to assist you in your battles at your former workplace came about in large part because of lesbians who gave a damn about the unjust situation many heterosexual women found themselves in, in their workplaces. They were at the forefront of changing the law to recognise workplace sexual harassment as an offence - directly benefitting you.

Shame on you Vicki Curran for trying to exclude conversations about gay marriage - the human rights and social justice whose day has come - from political discourse.

This is exactly the same approach white South African white power holders had towards black rights in the apartheid era.

Look where it got them! You are opting to be on not only the wrong side of history on this social justice issue, but pandering to prejudice is a nasty way conduct politics.

Noreen will be delighted if you stand as it will further boost her power base by splitting the vote.

It's called being "used" Vicki by the right of the ALP. I thought you would have already experienced enough of their way of doing business and their purported "commitment" to women's rights at work to be more suspicious when they came around complimenting you and urging you to run for a seat. How many of these ALP rightists supported you during your workplace turmoil?

vicki is a good fresh presence in council and am sure she has a lot to offer. her concern about future economic well being is spot on. however past affiliations, as shown in this article, are all over the place - there is no consistent ideological line shown that could be the basis of the new party initiative that she seeks. a lot of economic and political thought is required to achieve this. I dont think Michelle or Noreen offer firm foundations for the future, and the opposition to Bradbery is unexplained. Is this driven by perceived gay issues? are there other unresolved emotional issues?

Is she serious? If you can't defeat Noreen last election when was Labor was at a historic low, you've got no chance next election.

Vicky Curran, you've lost my vote before you even had it. Unlike you, the community can walk and chew gum at the same time, recognising that our civic conversation can include all the issues you mentioned and gay marriage. Furthermore, gay marriage IS about social justice. I can't believe you don't see that or that you would try to use the public campaign to allow same-sex couples to legally wed as a scapegoat for your political convenience. That makes you as bad as those you rail again. In fact, on this issue, it unfortunately makes you just like Noreen Hay.

Rather than a new political party, perhaps what the Illawarra needs most is an honest, hardworking Independent MP -beholden to no-one except the voters. Unfortunately that costs money that few honest hard working people can afford.

It looks like she supported everyone but Gordon!
