Couple misses out on Kleenmaid purchases by hours

16 Apr, 2009 10:52 AM
Irene White was due to take delivery of almost $10,000 worth of Kleenmaid kitchen appliances on the day the company went bust.

"The stuff was supposed to be delivered last Thursday," Ms White, of Keiraville, told the Mercury yesterday.

"I got a call at lunchtime and the lady said it wouldn't be happening today, it would be after Easter.

"Apparently what happened is that the drivers went around to the warehouse in Sydney and they were locked out and couldn't get anything."

It was only on Saturday, when Ms White and husband Andrew Stuckey read in a newspaper about Kleenmaid's collapse, that they realised their kitchen would not be delivered anytime soon.

"It was a bad weekend and we were a bit shocked," she said.

"I went down (to the Wollongong Kleenmaid shop) on Saturday afternoon, but everything had been cleaned out."

Ms White is one of a handful of disappointed customers who have contacted the Mercury since Kleenmaid announced it was voluntarily appointing an administrator, Deloitte, last week.

Deloitte has since said they cannot guarantee customers who have paid deposits or for their products in full would receive their goods. Warranties will not be honoured.

But Ms White is frustrated her calls and emails to Deloitte have gone unanswered.

She's also haunted by the day in late March when she went to the Kleenmaid showroom in Wollongong and ended up handing over $9351.

"It was actually quite busy and we asked why everything was going so cheap and they said because they had this special warranty going and that if we didn't buy it that day we would have to pay extra to get the warranty," Ms White said.

"So we went home and rang through the credit and went ahead with it."

Over the next fortnight Kleenmaid bombarded Ms White with glossy catalogues, postcards and other junkmail offering free holidays and extended warranties if she paid $299 to join the My Kleenmaid Rewards Club.

Ms White's only consolation now is that she didn't waste money on joining the club or get roped into buying an $8000 rangehood.

A few years ago we went to a kitchen design demonstration provided free by the Kleenmaid store. After the demo we were hounded by salesmen who would not take no for an answer. It was an experience similar to being in a car yard full of smooth annoying salesmen. I wrote to the management and said we would not buy from them because of the behaviour of the salesmen. In retrospect a wise decision for which I thank the style of the salesmen.

I do hope these people get their purchases or at least their money back!! $10,000 is never a small amount of money.

I paid $6,998.00 for kitchen appliances from Kleenmaid that have not been delivered so I share your anger and disappointment. The more I read about the company the more disgusted I am with them.

At the begining of I paid fully for a cooktop and requested delivery "ASAP". A week beore they went under I was offered a "loyalty" price on a dishwasher which I fortunately declined. I know againt the total amount, all our little amounts seems almost insignificant, but for me, like I sure for others, this was our savings, time my husband spent working away from our children. Not even VISA is interested, chargeback will take greater than 3 months and most likely not result in a positive outcome as the bank is unwilling to take on debt it has no hope of recovering.

As our house plans had just started and we were waiting for a building permit (they take so long). We purchased our kitchen appliances on 1/3 dep and six months intrest free $10599 total value. After working hard to make the final payment by Dec 2008 we ordered our kitchen appliances at the end of Feb and delivery was to be 6 weeks thats 6th-10th of april. When contacted them concerning delivery they informed us it would be after Easter. We all know what happened then with no hope of recovering any goods or money

I bought $23,000.00 worth of kitchen products including washer and dryer a total of eight products early 2009. Paid three installments which made up the total amount. I found out on the Thursday night before Easter and was devastated, could not sleep with worry. I was very lucky as I contacted my bank, the National and as I paid with my Visa card I received all my money back within two working days, extremely thankful.
