Doctors expect that Unanderra accident survivor Daniel Schroeder will be able to leave hospital in about a month, following his first successful skin graft operation on Monday.
The 21-year-old was pulled out of the burning vehicle by a six-strong team of passing motorists and rushed by ambulance to Wollongong Hospital after the accident, which claimed three of his workmates' lives on Friday night.
Mr Schroeder, who has burns to 30 per cent of his body, 10 per cent of which were full thickness, was then airlifted to the specialist burns unit at Royal North Shore Hospital where he remained yesterday.
Mr Schroeder's mother Tracey Schroeder said doctors' hoped it would take her son a month to physically recover.
