Doctors expect Unanderra accident survivor Daniel Schroeder could leave hospital in about a month, following his first successful skin graft operation on Monday.
The 21-year-old was pulled out of the burning vehicle by a six-strong team of passing motorists and rushed by ambulance to Wollongong Hospital after the accident on Friday night, which claimed the lives of three of his workmates.
Mr Schroeder, who has burns to 30 per cent of his body, was then airlifted to the specialist burns unit at Royal North Shore Hospital where he remained yesterday.
Mr Schroeder's mother Tracey Schroeder said doctors hoped it would take her son a month to physically recover.
"They still have him in an induced coma and he has had one lot of surgery and he is going to have another lot tomorrow," Mrs Schroeder said.
"He will be having more skin grafting tomorrow and they are saying that yesterday's was successful, they are hopeful, they are pretty confident."
The hospital has arranged accommodation in Sydney for Mrs Schroeder and her husband Uwe so they can remain close to their son throughout his treatment.
Mrs Schroeder said the intensive care and burns unit did not accept flowers, because of infection risks.
