The condition of a 21-year-old Dapto man who escaped from an horrific car accident in Unanderra, which claimed the lives of three of his friends, is not at bad as first thought, say police.
The 21-year-old man was pulled from the burning wreckage of the vehicle by a passing motorist, after it slammed into a telegraph pole and landed on a gas main on the Princes Hwy last night.
A trail of blood on the footpath show how he staggered for about 50m away from the blazing Holden Commodore.
Acting Inspector Mark Walker of Lake Illawarra police said he could not release the names of the four people involved in the accident as the results of post-mortems and dental checks on two of the bodies would not be available until Monday.
Neither would he reveal the identity of the passing motorist who helped to save the life of the 21-year-old Dapto man.
``The guy that got saved is in better condition that first thought,'' Insp Walker told the Mercury.
``His burns are not as serious as first thought, even though he is in a serious but stable condition, we just found out not long ago.
``He doesn't have burns to 50 per cent of his body, it is less than that and it appears to be less serious than first thought but he is still in recovery up at Royal North Shore Hospital.''
A spokesman for the hospital said the man was in a serious but stable condition.
