Crowned: the Illawarra's best Christmas light display

21 Dec, 2009 04:00 AM
The Christmas lights display at Cuthbert Dr, Mt Warrigal, has something for everyone: a nativity scene alongside a talking Homer Simpson statue; a gingerbread house with a slide; a polar bear down the driveway from a Disney World film; a snow machine and a ghost with its own sound effect; and of course Santa and his reindeer.

The illuminated wonderland captivated children yet again this year, and even won the heart of the Illawarra Mercury's editor who named it the winner of the Mercury's Christmas lights competition for the second year in a row.

Craig Hughes said he has no idea how many lights have gone into his creation.

"I gave up counting," he said. "There's something different every year, people expect to see something different."

Mr Hughes first began decorating his house at Christmas time to bring some cheer to his father who was suffering from cancer.

Now it has become a Christmas tradition which climaxes on New Year's Eve.

"It's absolutely hectic," he said.

Winning for a second year was a "wonderful surprise".

Mercury editor Stuart Howie judged the finalists.

A self-confessed Christmas lights junkie who has run similar competitions in other regions, Mr Howie said he never ceased to be amazed by the efforts put in by entire families.

"Thank you to all the entrants in our lights competition. They have really contributed to a sense of joy in communities across the Illawarra."

He said the Mt Warrigal house was a standout. "You have to see it to believe it. I think even Santa's workshop staff would have been impressed."

Great show. Glad I am not paying the electricity bill. Perhaps his prize could include a generator - or a solar panel to take some of the load.

I am shocked that even at this time of year, with a lovely story such as a family with an incredible christmas display, both Fergie and Barry can find a way to be negative. The cost is on the family, not you so why even bring it up?

My family of 6 were so impressed by this house and families contribution to the community and of course keeping the christmas spirit alive, good on you Mr Hughe`s and family what a real gift you are to the community and bohoo to the nasty skeptics that even complain about the price of things at christmas time no spirit have these people and what happened to the time to be jolly.Mr Hughe`s even don`s the red and white suit and gives the kids FREE lollies something really special and something Fergie and Barry obviously would never DO.Congratulations and many thanks Mr Hughe`s and helpers for another great effort.Merry Christmas and all the best for the new year

Could not agree more Devo. My advice to Craig, not that I think you need any, is be proud of what you have achieved...it is sensational. Ignore " the knockers "... they'll always be around ! Have a great Xmas-New Year and may 2010 be kind to you and yours.

Of course of course you are all right, but think how much more good one could do if instead of hanging on the roof and "investing money" in glittery glitter spent the same time with the needy and gave them money to better their life? Suppose show off for "Them" will have to do. Merry Christmas to all.
