Sergeant John Klepczaerek said the driver of the vehicle allegedly left the scene of the crash.

A vehicle was found a short time later and a Dapto man was being questioned at Port Kembla Police Station, Sgt Klepczarek said.

Investigators are appealing for public help to identify the cyclist, who was described as having an athletic build and aged in his early 30s.

He was wearing a blue cycling shirt with white parts, black cycling shorts with blue and white stripes and a red helmet with white air holes.

He was riding a black, red and white coloured Pinarello FT8 Carbon bike.

Anyone with information about the incident or the man’s identity should contact Warilla Police Station on 4295 2699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Police are preparing a report for the coroner.

Recreational and racing standard cyclists train on the quiet back roads of West dapto and Marshall Mount and Calderwood roads to escape the motoring traffic found elsewhere in our Region. Is there any where else safe to ride a bike these days?

So Sad. I ride this road regularly, and can't figure out how this happened. This is the reality that all cyclists live with each day. It's a bond we all share, although we all ride differently and respond to the dangers differently. I feel like whether I knew this person or not, I totally understand him, and am therefore saddened at the loss.
