Dan Murphy's set for North Wollongong

Dan Murphy's set for North Wollongong

17 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
Dan Murphy’s is poised to move into a plum North Wollongong address as part of a long-brewing project by site owner and Novotel developer Michael Corban.

The Woolworths-owned liquor merchant has held a lease on the site for more than four years as it moved through different planning authorities.

Mr Corban received approval for a $7million building project at the eastern side of North Wollongong railway station in February 2010.

JBA Planning has now lodged an application on behalf of Cornathu and Cashstar to establish a Dan Murphy’s at the site.

Under the proposal, the liquor giant will be the main ground-floor tenant in a two-storey building that includes more than 4000sqm of shop space.

If approved, work on the complex would likely start mid-year and be completed within 18 months, according to a Woolworths spokeswoman.

It would replace several houses facing Stafford St, a vacant lot and the former Dance World entertainment academy, and would neighbour Wollongong City Motors.

‘‘We are waiting for council to approve minor modifications,’’ Mr Corban said.

‘‘Then we should be able to develop something that would be at least a start to making ugly Flinders St look a little bit more as we would like it.’’

The complex will include at least four other offerings, flagged by leasing agent Graham Belfield, of Jones Lang LaSalle, for a potential supermarket, fruit shop, retail store, bulky goods supplier or bank.

Mr Corban told the Mercury the site might also include a medical centre or a chemist.

The site incorporates five addresses: 4B and 6 Flinders St and 2, 7 and 12 Stafford St, all bought by Mr Corban within the past 10 years.

It includes 167 car parking spaces and proposes liquor store trading hours from 9am to 8pm Monday to Wednesday; 9am to 9pm Thursday to Saturday and 10am to 7pm Sunday.

A development application for the complex was first lodged on September 19, 2007, then approved on February 12, 2010.

Work was held up by the RTA, which had concerns about allowing an entry and exit from busy Flinders St.

This section of town will become alcohol central with a dan murphys and the north gong pub which also sells grog only up the road. Pity the poor residents nearby . Dissapointing development for a major gateway into and out of wollongong

Thanks for sticking it out and securing something new for North Gong. Looking forward to seeing the local strip revitalised.

Alistair, Woolworths owns Dan Murphys and Nth Gong Hotel (Albion Park and Balgownie also). No doubt Nth Gong will shut its bottle shop and expand the pub once its new bottle shop opens up across the road

What a joke, we dont need any more liquor shops about, we have enough drunks in wollongong. And every one is always sreaming we need more police, how about less bottle shops and better hours for the pubs and clubs instead.

North Gong Pub Bottle Shop has been closed for almost two years

Something you forgot Alistair - a bottle shop by definition is usually a place where people purchase their alcohol and take elsewhere... so what the hell are you whining for... surely WCC is smart enough to make the zone a alcohol free zone on the street. The benefits of the proposal out weigh the minor issues that come with it... Jobs... potential for property values to increase given proximity to this project if it has a supermarket. The only drama would be traffic but I am sure a round about or traffic lights would resolve this issue.

That end of Flinders Street is a disgrace with all its empty abandoned lots. While I'm not a fan of Woolies or Coles it is good to see at least someone investing in the Gong. You can't go wrong selling cheap grog.

I'm told the liquor shop at North Gong pub has already closed, with rumours being something was planned to go in to the old Lone Star building. I don't care what gets built along this stretch, as long as it deters from the state of urban blight it currently stands in. As the main drive in to the city from the freeway, this road embarasses me. Build whatever you want, just make it scenic!
