David Campbell breaks his silence

21 May, 2010 04:40 PM
Keira MP David Campbell has spoken to the media outside his home saying he will talk through the scandal with his family before deciding if he would stand for re-election.

The former transport minister resigned last night after revelations he was seen leaving a gay sex club in Kensington.

  • VIDEO: David Campbell says he's sorry

"I have made some personal choices which have put me and my family in a situation, I have apologised to them for it," he said.

"I apologise to the community and I accept responsibility for the situation that I have put my family and myself in.

"I want to make it very clear that never, never over the period of my public life have those personal choices impacted in any way, shape or form on the decisions I’ve had to make in public life."

Mr Campbell thanked all those who had sent messages of support to himself and his family.

He said it had been a very humiliating time and pleaded with the media to give his family the privacy they needed to work through this.

When asked if he had ever thought his secret may be exposed, Mr Campbell said: "Look, these are some choices I’ve made, they have caused a great deal of embarrassment and it’s not for me to go into the detail of those private issues here, they’re for me to work through with my family."

David Campbell made mistakes in life and in work, like everyone does, but he does not deserve this. Politicians are judged by the media and public - people who don't really know who they are - everyday of their lives. It must be a horrible existence - is it any wonder the standard of people attracted to politics is the way it is? I have met Mr Campbell and for all his flaws, he seemed a good man. Attempts by the media to link his leaving a club with the F3 accident or the fact Campbell presents as a family man, in order to justify running the story, are flimsy at best and disgusting at worst. People and the media will continue to say about Campbell, and the next lamb we sacrifice for entertainment, whatever they want. Some say people in public roles deserve that scruitiny. The state of politics in this country dissapoints me. The state of the media makes me sick.

I'm not a labor voter or supporter, but feel this act by the media is one of their lowest. Where is the public interest in relation to his position? Politicians are fair game for their politics, not their sexuality. Family values is being sprouted as validation - yes, he is still a family man and this is very much a private family matter. How low must we stoop for public entertainment? Watch out any gay AFL players....I hope the people of the Illawarra judge him on his politics only, not his sexuality. I hope he and his family are given the privacy to work through this dreadful mess they find themselves in.

I don't even see what the scandal is. His marriage and sexuality are nobody's business, and neither have any bearing on his ability to be a public servant. He hasn't broken any laws. Just... drop it.

This is a wonderful family man with an amazing family. STOP reporting about him and dragging him through the mud. We do not want to hear it. We are Aussies, not Americans. We do not want to know about the personal lives of these people. Thanks to David and your family for the years of service to Wollongong in particular.

Hang on a minute gong boy, Campbell deceived his constituents. He created an image which he believed was more acceptable to the public so he could gain office. He was being DISHONEST. Now he is saying that his homosexuality did not influence his judgement. That is impossible, he was constantly protecting his real existence. I say good riddance to another dishonest politician.

If Mr. Campbell had been a member of Family First, or a morals campaigner in the mould of Fred Nile, I would fully understand the indignation, but where was he prying into bedrooms, or lecturing people about “morals”?

Was he some kind of Mary Whitehouse or Fred Nile, or am I missing something?

The question of Mr. Campbell's performance as a Minister is clearly not the issue. Foremost is the gutter media behaviour of Channel Seven. Let's remove the lame excuse of the event being of public concern because he drove a ministerial car. He drove all the way from the City to Kensington - the whole 6km. Wow! The suggestions arising from the club he visited are issues which entitle privacy, They do not concern anyone other than Mr. Campbell and his family. If he has to answer to anyone it is certainly not the public or Channel Seven. Maybe to himself and Christian beliefs. The rest of us. Let's mind our own damn business.

Sorry people, by having this debate you are actually perpetuating the story.

My main concern is that he was living this "secret life" that could, and probably was, used against him by people who knew about it. How many times was he compromised by the fear/threat of being exposed?

History has proven no one really cares what a politician does in their private life. He is not dishonest because that would imply he was under some kind of duty to reveal what he does behind private closed doors. His personal business is just that - personal - what counts is what kind of Minister he is/was. i think the media were bored this week to follow him around with a camera like a sneak??
