Dragons grand-final fever grows

19 Aug, 2009 05:00 AM
St George Illawarra Dragons merchandise is flying off shelves around the Illawarra as the NRL finals series approaches.

The finals are just weeks away and retailers are struggling to keep up with demand for Dragons gear.

"It's selling really well - the whole range - from kids to adults," Best and Less Wollongong manager Graham Wilson said.

"It's selling like crazy," Supporters World Wollongong staff member Michael Puglisi said.

Jerseys in particular were selling quickly.

"I'm actually sick of the word Dragon," Mr Puglisi said.

Some stores are bringing stock in from interstate to meet demand.

"We can't get enough stock - as soon as we get any it's gone," Rebel Sport Wollongong licensing manager Shaun McCreddy said.

"We've made deals to get stock in from other states."

A spokeswoman for adidas, manufacturer of Dragons merchandise, confirmed that the company would step up production of jerseys in September to ensure stock was available before the finals.

I believe the so called luminaries at Adidas have entered into an exclusive arrangement with the Gold Coast Titans from 2010 onwards, effectively dumping the Dragons. Serves Adidas right, next year when the merchandise sales tank and market penetration will be limited from Paradise Point in the Nth to the Tweed in the South, instead of Australia wide with the Dragons brand and their enormous supporter base.

So with the dragon bandwagon all buying the ADIDAS jerseys this year you think Adidas are worried??

Why would Adidas enter into an "exclusive arrangement" with one NRL side? They have no problem doing all the NZ S14 sides, All Blacks, British Lions, numerous soccer/football sides and a multitude of other sporting sides. I find it hard to believe they would need to have such an arrangement.

I did some surfing last night, (namely the press releases from Adidas) and the Adidas agreement with the Dragons started in 06 is a 5 year deal. I suggest that "exclusivity" in the case means no-one else will make Titans gear as the Adidas contract with the Dragons is still in place. Oh and Stephen, the divisive talk is old news and pointless. It's been the Dragons since 99, let's get behind them and win this thing.
