Drunk driver 'drove 230km'

9/06/2008 4:00:00 AM
A motorist allegedly drank a bottle of sparkling wine then drove 230km with almost five times the legal limit of alcohol in his system on Saturday.

Southern Region Traffic co-ordinator Senior Sergeant Mick Timms said such incidents had made for a "typical" long weekend on the region's roads, but for all the wrong reasons.

"The greater the police presence on our roads, the more people who get caught," Snr Sgt Timms said.

Provisional police figures show that 154 motorists have so far been charged for speeding in the Wollongong, Lake Illawarra and Shoalhaven police commands.

A total of 8462 people have been breath tested with 10 being charged. Despite 13 crashes, the region remains fatality free.

Police were attending a car accident north of Milton at 9pm on Saturday when a 48-year-old male from North Ryde allegedly collided with the queue of traffic.

He was given a roadside breath test and later returned a reading of 0.225.

The man allegedly admitted drinking a bottle of sparkling wine and lemonade at Crows Nest between 2.30pm and 4pm, before travelling to Ulladulla, a distance of 230km.

He was charged with high range PCA and driving whilst disqualified.

A 70-year-old-male was also charged with high range PCA after returning a blood alcohol reading of 0.225 on Saturday night. He was stopped at a RBT station on Windang Rd, Primbee, about 7.45pm.

A 46-year-old male, disqualified from driving until 2023, was stopped on the Princes Hwy, Fairy Meadow, at 8.20pm on Saturday and charged for driving whilst disqualified, breach of bail and stating a false name.

Various speeding offences were also detected, including a 39-year-old Gerringong man who was stopped on the Princes Hwy, Gerringong, travelling 123km/h in an 80 zone.

Double demerit points as part of the long weekend police road blitz continue until midnight tonight.
