Drunken attacks on people "just doing their jobs" would not be tolerated, a Wollongong magistrate warned yesterday.
Michael Stoddart jailed Sidney Jason James for six months for his part in an "appalling assault" on a taxi rank security guard at Kiama.
James, 35, of Hoskins Ave, Warrawong, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and intimidation at Kiama on May 23 this year.
The court heard James and a co-accused started harassing one of two guards on the rank in May after they were escorted out of Kiama Inn Hotel.
James approached one of the two taxi rank guards - a male and female - and said "I don't like the look of you" and, with his co-accused, threatened to "flog" the male.
The co-accused punched the male guard in the face, knocking him to the ground and when he tried to run James caught up and shoved him to the ground causing the guard to break his left arm.
"The facts in this assault are appalling ... the co-accused did most of it but you were there," Mr Stoddart said.
"You have a skinful and then want to fight. These people were just doing their job," Mr Stoddart said.
The court heard James had done jail time for driving while disqualified and had convictions for violence.
Solicitor Sian Aldis said James was now in a stable relationship, had two children aged four and six and was trying to control his binge drinking by distancing himself from negative influences.
James was sentenced to six months jail.
The sentence has been appealed on severity and James was allowed bail until the appeal is heard.
