Federal Government pledges help for the Illawarra

The Federal Government has pledged to stand ‘‘shoulder to shoulder’’ with the Illawarra after BlueScope Steel’s decision to shed 800 jobs at Port Kembla.It promised ‘‘immediate and practical support’’ including a $30 million Investment and Innovation Fund to support new business ventures in the region and create high-skilled manufacturing jobs.The Commonwealth will contribute $20 million towards the fund, which will also comprise $5 million from BlueScope and $5 million from the NSW Government.Around $100 million under the Federal Government's existing Steel Transformation Plan (STP) will also be brought forward so BlueScope can access it immediately.

  • Full text of BlueScope’s announcement to ASXThe funds are part of the Federal Government's previously announced $300 million assistance package for the steel industry to help mitigate the effects of the carbon tax.The Government has also pledged assistance of up to $10 million for sacked workers to access intensive job services and training assistance.Innovation, Industry, Science and Research Department secretary Don Russell will lead a ‘‘whole-of-government response’’ to the BlueScope restructure and work with stakeholders to help the region adjust.The Government will also help sacked BlueScope workers to leave the region to find work.Redundant workers will be immediately eligible for payments of up to $6000 of relocation assistance, with an additional $3000 for families with dependent children.The response will be monitored and reviewed, and the Government said it would respond further ‘‘if necessary to ensure the affected communities make a successful economic transition.’’For information about assistance call the Bluescope Support Hotline on 1800 107 233.
