 Fewer visit CBD: survey

Fewer visit CBD: survey

06 May, 2010 09:11 AM
Illawarra residents are making fewer visits to Wollongong's CBD since the introduction of parking meters, an independent survey has found.

The survey of more than 50 people by Smith's Hill High School Year 11 student Austin Wyatt revealed strong opposition to the meters.

It found that 79 per cent disagreed with their introduction.

"After a few weeks of the survey, I would say spending when people visit the mall isn't changing, but they are using it less often," Austin, 16, said.

Since Wollongong City Council introduced the meters, about 50 per cent of respondents said they had made fewer visits to the CBD.

"People are starting to think about using Figtree or Fairy Meadow as an alternative to the mall, because it is much easier," Austin said.

He conducted the survey as part of a geography senior research project.

The Mt Pleasant resident will approach small businesses with the finished survey, to analyse the drop in CBD visitor numbers.

"I'm really interested in what the council told these businesses about the impact parking meters would have on sales after the mall was refurbished," he said.

The latest figures align closely with a survey Austin conducted nearly 12 months ago, on the attitudes to parking meters.

"From that first survey, 80 per cent of people said they would use the mall less often and around 10 per cent said they would stop using it at all," he said.

Austin is seeking more submissions for the survey, which finishes on May 21.

Perhaps we need a couple of questions in the survey that read; 1. How much is the CBD parking meters costing Crown Street traders in lost business? 2. Will Wollongong City Council compensate Crown Street traders for business lost due to shoppers being driven away by parking meters. 3. Does the money collected from parking meters out-weigh the business lost to Crown Street traders and the shoppers that have been driven away.

Well that was a gimme! Absolutely everyone, bar David Farmer, knew that this would happen. All he had to do was pick up the phone and ring the lord mayor of Newcastle, and he would of found out just what a bad decision it would be. He was told, and told this would happen.

David Farmer and his Administrator friends are hoping people will drift back after the noise has died down. Well this little black duck won't be one of them. They have lost me forever.Didn't realise how friendly and handy Dapto was till I changed my shopping habits, and the parking is FREE.

What a great decision by David Farmer and his cronies. lets install some meters, and ruin the turnover of heaps of buinesses in the gong. After that, we will raise the cost of everyones rates (40% in the last 5 years), and then, we will charge to enter the pools. We might even kick some costomers out of the council carparks so our managers can park in there, just to top it off. When is he going to listen to what the people want and say?

Good on Austin for doing this survey. The council paid researchers thought a half hour parking limit on Burelli St would work, it didn't and had to be changed after it damaged local business. To bad they didn't hire Austin to do the research, I'm sure he would have got the time limits right the first time. Then again, Austin's research would have shown installing parking meters would be a mistake. I no longer go to the CBD and take my business to the outer suburbs. All those in the northern suburbs who need white goods or electrical items should try Robert Barnhill across the road from the Corrimal police station, great service, great prices and no parking meters.

Glad I don't have a business in lower Church & Keira Sts, not a vacant spot to be seen. Seems all the parking meters have achieved is to shift the parking problems onto someone else & the shoppers onto somewhere else.

Having grown up here over the last 31 years i have come to love the laid back, blue collar style of the gong. Another world away from the flashy, traffic filled, parking metered streets of Sydney. I am so dissapointed with our council for installing meters here. In my view this is just another tax. I already pay my income tax,my (ever increasing above state average) council rates and my car regestration. After paying all these taxes i belive i am more than entitled to use and park on the roads without paying another shamless grab for money by the council. I was a weekly spender at my local newsagency in the mall prior to the introduction of meters but have not been back since opting for the corner shop. The CBD business is now down $1500 a year. i will never pay for parking in Wollongong. That is why i live here. It wont be long before the council trys to install meters at the beach and parks and at that stage i think it will be time to look at selling up and heading south and leave this greedy, council behind to totally ruin this beautiful place. I dont like to be this bitter and pecimistic however emotions are running high!

I am opposed to the parking meters and to add insult to injury I was forced to go into the CBD to attend an appointment and ended up paying $8 in two meters as they kept taking my money and producing no ticket. I was told by a passer by that 'none of them work properly'. As if I wasnt annoyed enough!

Wollongong council need a few lessons in community spirit and public relations. People (LOCALS) are becoming sick of councils grab for cash...im thinking of claiming council on my tax return as a dependant

I was in Wollongong last week and rather pay the already rated Illawarra I used the shopping centre car park. I will go a hundred miles further than stuff money in a parking metre. Wollongong is off my Visiter list. Keven Rudd has an addiction to money and so has his supports. I say break the habbit and put people first.
