The driver of the car that slammed into a power pole and exploded, killing three people, was a 27-year-old man from Oak Flats, police have revealed.
Police say the driver lost control of his Holden sedan while travelling south along the Princes Hwy at Unanderra, near Orange Grove Rd, about 7.30pm yesterday.
``The driver ... lost control and the vehicle struck a power pole,'' a NSW Police Force spokesman said.
``The vehicle then ignited into flames.''
The 27-year-old male driver and two of his passengers, a 24-year-old man from Farmborough Heights and a 19-year-old man from Brownsville died at the scene.
A 21-year-old man from Dapto was rescued from the burning vehicle by a passing motorist.
The injured man, who suffered serious burns, was rushed by ambulance to Wollongong Hospital. This morning he was transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.
Fire crews also responded to put out the car fire.
The Southern Region Crash Investigation Unit is investigating the crash, and anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
