Smoke was detected coming from an underground cable duct at the hot strip mill at about 6am.
Fire and Rescue NSW’s Darrel Muzyczka said staff at the plant used extinguishers to put out the blaze before firefighters arrived.
Mr Muzyczka said a nearby computer room became "heavily smoke-logged".
‘‘The smoke was cleared by fire brigade personnel with industrial fans," he said.
Nine employees evacuated before fire crews arrived.
A spokesman for Bluescope said firefighters were called as a precaution.
“A smouldering cable was identified as the source and extinguished shortly after by an employee. All employees are safe."
It is believed damage was limited to the cable and supporting tray and production at the mill will resume later today. Investigations into the cause of the fire continue.
Fire crews were called at 6.06am and declared the site safe at 8.42am.
