Firefighters battle blaze in Puckeys Estate

03 Nov, 2009 05:31 PM
Firefighters battled a blaze that broke out in Puckeys Estate at Fairy Meadow on Tuesday afternoon, sending a thick plume of smoke over the area.

A NSW Fire Brigade spokesperson said the fire had burnt out an area 100m by 80m, but was not threatening any property.

The fire started at 3.50pm, and NSW Fire Brigade crews from Bulli, Thirroul, Unanderra and Rural Fire Service volunteers were at the scene.

"It's an area of bush and they're having a bit of difficulty with water availability," the spokesman said.

"One side of it is along the beach, there are no hydrants along there but we have got water tankers on scene.

"The fire is contained, there is no property in danger. It's going to burn itself out and create a bit of smoke for a little while."

In this day and age, with all the technical knowhow, it is impossible to believe that they can't pump water from the largest source in the world - the ocean. Puckies is one spittle from seaside, let alone Fairy Creek. I live in a rural environment wherein the Fireies drop the pump nozzle into anything wet. Seen it & done it myself.

Let it all burn out. It's prime real estate that should be put to better use. Environmental protection my eye - most of it is just overgrown weeds. Are we a beachside city or aren't we?

I went down to see the fire and took a few photos, it didn't seem to be anything major. I think they should of just let it burn out. It is a stated above, just overgrown weeds. I don't think it would of hurt too much to let it burn off and maybe begin maintaining it. It is a nice stretch of coast between the lagoon and Fairy Meadow beach. Maybe if they tidy it up a bit, maybe put a few cafe's or something along there it would attract more people?

Big Brother of Kembla uses salt water all over the roads, or at least did when I worked there. Anyway, why can't salt water be used? Can't the gear be flushed - like we do with out tinnies - by the tens of thousands? What is worse, salt over the burning scrub or threatening fire - not that it is really threatening in that situation, but if it was a dire necessity, is not salt water the answer if there is no other choice? Please - I am only asking.
