Fireworks to cap big day for Illawarra

26 Jan, 2009 03:00 AM
The night skies of Wollongong Harbour will burn with national pride tonight as the region is treated to one of the country's biggest fireworks displays.

This evening's colourful demonstration will top a fun-filled day of patriotic activities around the Illawarra.

Residents can start their day with a big breakfast at Lake Illawarra's Reddall Reserve, followed by a sand modelling competition and free face painting for children.

Kiama's Coronation Park will also host a range of activities for the family, including treasure hunts and sack races.

Brighton Beach will host today's early aquathon, followed by the Aqua Cafe sailing regatta and thong-throwing competitions.

There will be markets and food stalls all day along Cliff Rd and at Osborne Park, which will also be the spot for kids looking for stage shows, rides, games and competitions.

The inaugural Gun Battery March will step off from the Old Court House and march along Cliff Rd to Battery Park.

Snagging a spot in front of the main stage at Belmore Basin will ensure a great view of the many musical acts to take the stage in the afternoon, as well as the spectacular fireworks display set to conclude the evening.

Wollongong's managing partner of the National Australia Bank, Andrew Love, advises revellers of the road closures in place for the celebrations.

He encourages use of the free park-and-ride system.

"Those who wish to take advantage of the system can simply park their car at JJ Kelly Park, off Springhill Rd, before catching a free shuttle bus at one of two stops within the park," he said.

""Wollongong Harbour will burn with national pride tonight as the region is treated to one of the country's biggest fireworks displays."" National pride? You mean fireworks - those noisy, polluting bundles of papr and chemicals.

Make sure your pets are safe and secure, otherwise they might bolt.

The animal welfare agencies have enough to do with day to day surrenders and strays, without another load of stray, frightened and sometimes injured animals on their doorsteps.

Fergie, You must be a member of the Wollongong over 65 fun police.

Let the young people, and those with children enjoy the celebrations of our great country. It is surprising that you dislike the 9pm fireworks, as surely it is well and truly past your 7.30 bedtime. you wouldnt even know that they had happened, except that you read the Mercury.

They were good fireworks, shame about the fact that you couldnt watch them without the fear of having a bottle smashed into the back of your head by a under age drinker! There was no atmosphere this Australia Day, i hope all those teens have the worst hang overs they will ever have in their lives, thats if they didnt already end up in hospital getting their stomachs pumped. And thanks for ruining the Day for the percentage of people who just wanted to enjoy themselves with the decency and respect that this country deserves.
