Firies clean up mercury spill quietly during HSC

21 Oct, 2009 03:08 PM
Emergency crews were called to clean up mercury that was spilled at Smiths Hill High School this afternoon.

The NSW Fire Brigade's hazardous materials crews from Wollongong and Shellharbour attended but were forced to conduct a quiet mop up as Higher School Certificate exams were underway nearby.

The mercury was spilled accidentally and covered an area approximately 2sqm about 2.10pm.

Crews were in their splash suits and breathing apparatus to prevent contact with the toxic metal during the clean-up operation.

It was actually about 11:15. The Fire Brigade didn't turn up till 2:10. The HSC Students were on the other side of the school.

"forced to conduct a quiet mop up". Yeah, they came out with air-horns and clown suits, but had to quieten down because of the tests. Bit of a wasted opportunity.

No they don't mean 12:10. It happened at 11:30 but the Fire Brigade didn't arrive until 2:10. It wasn't even a very big deal.
