'Fish magnets' to be sunk off Port Kembla

12 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
Four purpose-built artificial reef units will be sunk about 2.4km offshore from Perkins Beach, south of Port Kembla, under a proposal being considered by the Department of Planning.

Similar artificial reefs are proposed off South Head in Sydney and off Blacksmiths Beach south of Newcastle.

The steel structures - modelled on world leading artificial reef technology used in Korea and Japan - will be the first purpose-built offshore artificial reefs (OARS) deployed off the NSW coast. The Sydney reef will be the first constructed.

Details of the proposals were released yesterday and submissions can be lodged until April 19.

Up to 40 countries around the world have artificial reefs, which were traditionally made from "waste materials" such as car bodies, tyres or shipwrecks.

Since 2005, American-designed artificial reef components, or "reef balls", have been placed in sheltered NSW waterways including Lake Macquarie, Botany Bay, St Georges Basin, Lake Conjola and Merimbula Lake.

Eight months after the reefs were created in Lake Macquarie, the abundance and diversity of fish caught by anglers was found to be as good, or better, than on naturally occurring reefs.

The reefs are being proposed by State Government agency Industry and Investment NSW and Primary Industries Minister Steve Whan said it was an exciting step in the bid to improve recreational fishing opportunities in NSW.

"This development is expected to be a boon for local communities by improving fishing opportunities, expenditure on fishing-related items and services and increased employment," Mr Whan said.

The steel structures will each measure about 12m high, 15m long and 12m wide, weighing more than 35 tonnes.

They will be sunk in water about 34m deep off Perkins Beach and spaced 200m apart in a line.

Based on a Korean design and varied to suit conditions, the structures will be built on land, transported to the proposed site by barge and lowered by crane on to the sea floor. The process is expected to take up to eight months.

Two sites off the Illawarra coast were considered for the artificial reef, including a 36sq km region to the south of Stanwell Park and extending to Bulli.

But the area off Perkins Beach and south of the Five Islands Nature Reserve was selected as the most appropriate site for the reef.

Other areas along the Illawarra coast were ruled out because of their proximity to the sewerage outfall south of Wollongong City Beach, shipping lanes into Port Kembla Harbour, existing reef shoals and shipwrecks.

Missed how it is funded. Parking meters will pay for it?

Terrific idea. It will improve the fish stocks. The area where the reefs are being put is known locally as 'Poverty Bay' and should result is a name change. To stop the decline in our local fish stocks we need more of these innovative programes. Congratulations to the NSW Government and Primary Industries Minister Steve Whan.

Barry, in your rush to negativity, maybe you missed the point that these are not being proposed by council and so have nothing to do with council revenue, parking meter generated or otherwise.......

No doubt that this is a positive for improving fish stocks & make the anglers/divers happy but what of changes to currents & sand flows? Quite a large reef once established, 4 x 35m wide spaced 200m apart is not much less than 1km of growing reef suddenly plonked in the midddle of a bay. Lets hope that along with other man made changes to our coastline eg the breakwall just south/ coal loader just north, its not hello fishies, bye bye sandy beaches. Only time will tell.

Pierre, I would prefer they fix : hospitals, transport, crime first, we can always import fish from China (like everything else).

Barry, no arguement about funding essential services, but the reef is not council funded which was what you were suggesting by raising the issue of parking meters. Yes surely State government has more pressing funding demands..........

Lets hope they don't turn it into a marine park when the fish start to come. Once it's established the nsw Government will find some way to make a dollar out of it at the expense of the fishermen.

Awesome idea, this is what we need for Lake Illawarra. On the western side of Windang bridge, the channel is closing up again because it wasn't done correctly in the first place by the Lake Authority. You could dredge around the Islands on the western side of the bridge, which would be an ideal place to build an artificial reef. This would do two things, open up the Lake to the ocean creating tidal flow again and build fish stock for both the ocean and Lake Illawarra. Then make the Entrance a no fish zone. Reduce the number of professional fisherman on the Lake and allow the fish stock to build again.

As to funding, Council could ask for experssions of interest to fix: hospitals, crime, roads same as for “Fish Magnets”, same procedure, more pressing issues!
