Five sacked over parking meter stalemate

29 Jul, 2010 12:00 AM
Wollongong City Council has sacked retail and community representatives from its parking review committee.

Non-council members were contacted by email yesterday and told their input was no longer welcome - just days after the committee's first meeting.

The July 23 meeting ended in a stalemate after business representatives requested a three-month shutdown of the parking meter system while problems were overcome.

  • Council gives ground in parking meter war

In the email, the council's property and recreation manager Peter Coyte said he had been advised the community representatives were unwilling to discuss parking meter issues unless a moratorium was instituted, and therefore there was no further benefit in meeting with them.

Although he pushed for meters to be shut down, City Diggers general manager Phil Ryan last night said he believed three of the five non-council committee members held differing opinions.

"They've decided the attitude of committee members, including the Labour Council, the IBC (Illawarra Business Council) and mall management is that they're not willing to take part in the review process because we won't proceed if there's not a moratorium, but that's not the position of the Labour Council, the mall or IBC," he said.

Stunned by the turn of events, Mr Ryan said he was disappointed his feedback was not valued.

A council spokesperson confirmed the retail and community representatives had been contacted and would no longer be involved in the review committee.

"The organisers of the public meeting on parking meters were invited to be involved, they presented a position and were not willing to negotiate," she said.

"While we respect their position and take it on board, we will be consulting with a whole range of people in the community as part of the review process.

"If anyone in the community is interesting in engaging with us on this topic, we are willing to listen."

Let’s get a committee of yes Men/Women together so they can shift the blame when again they come up with the wrong plan. The vast majority of people DON’T want paid parking. When the Labour Council, the IBC (Illawarra Business Council) and Mall Management agree that paid parking will ruin the city Shopping Centre, then those running the WCC must listen. Two things I would like to ask is do those implementing the paid parking get Free parking complements of the WCC (Rate payers) & lastly has a contract been signed for the use of the Parking meters, if so then there is no way the WCC will get rid of them until the contract expires.

What a lovely view it must be from the ivory tower of council, looking down on the masses. The ignorant crowds just do not understand the terrible burdon of reigning over them from on high in council. How unappreciative they are of the wonderful golden parking meters, which have eliminated the congestion of shoppers from the glorious CBD. How dare these five upstarts question the role of these holy meters! OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!! And if the rest of the peasants cannot afford to park to buy their daily bread, then "Let them eat cake!"

GIVE US BACK OUR FREE PARKING!

In the absence of elected Councillors, our city council is being run by unaccountable bureaucrats. This unhealthy situation was created by the NSW ALP state government who have consistently refused to restore a return to democracy in Wollongong before September 2012. They will be gone before then.

Well done!! Call for interested parties for input and if they don't agree with non elected WCC reps position, tell them to go away!! Why would anyone else want to "negotiate" with these people? when they don't listen, and exactly who would have more of an interest in the parking meter debacle than business owners, reps etc?? Businesses who rely on cash turnover that is--, not just real estate agents, accountants etc that WCC wants to deal with now, as mentioned previously!

Guess this is why Wollongong always seems to get it wrong. It's Council's way or the highway. Negotiation is a two way street, and they would do well to listen to the people who are most affected, before we have a city showcasing for lease signs and no shoppers in sight. Unless something is done soon, Wollongong will die a slow agonising death.

This is what happens when non-elected body gets power to do whatever they please to do. Glad that revenge can be taken during current election!

Hey Silvertail, you are so close to getting it right ... Wollongong is dying a slow agonising death.

Silvertail- A slow death?? it will happen much quicker than you think. When the retail stores all close lets see how much the council makes from the rates of the empty shops.

I am still wondering who are the people who used to take up all the 2 hour parking spots for the entire day. Me thinks they were office workers. It is great to be able to get a park in Kembla St. Perhaps the charges could be the same as the parking buildings

The problem is that the people running the WCC dont listen to the community. The city council is being run by a bunch of bureaucrats who feign community consultation and then ignore the community input THEY asked for. It was the same with the recent community consultation review - and dont get me started on the dogs crapping on all our beaches policy no one wants
