Flash floods hit Illawarra

05 Feb, 2008 04:51 PM
Consistent rain overnight which caused flash flooding this morning has left parts of the Illawarra under water.

Bong Bong road was cut off and it was feared Dapto Public School would be forced to close for the day. At 11am, the school decided to stay open, with a skeleton staff.

A number of roads, particularly in the south of Wollongong, were also closed as the water rose.

South Coast train services were delayed for 30 minutes.

Wollongong had received 174mm of rain in 24 hours until 9am, and Nowra 112mm. Kiama had received 169mm.

The Severe Weather Warning has been cancelled for the Sydney Metropolitan Area, Central Tablelands and northeastern districts although thunderstorms may produce localised heavy rain, particularly this afternoon. The situation will be monitored and if necessary a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for flash flooding will be issued.
