The Woonona woman had the confirmation that all mums craved - that their children were happy.

Brenton has Down syndrome and severe dyspraxia, a disorder affecting his speech.

He also has leaking heart valves, the reminder of open heart surgery he underwent at four months old.

But it is 21-year-old Brenton's abilities that do the talking.

The "footy nut" mentors and coaches primary-aged children, has an orange belt in judo, surfs in his spare time, and has even found time to help out with lighting and sound at a local theatre company.

His ultimate dream is to one day work behind the scenes on movies.

When his mum Lisa Ashford-Potter told him it was good to have a back-up plan, he gave it some thought.

"I've got it, mum. Sausage roll taster," he replied.

While Brenton has endured more than his fair share of life's obstacles, he is living proof that people with disabilities should not be cast aside.

An event in November called Don't Dis My Ability, will showcase the talent and skills of Brenton and numerous others in the Illawarra who are living happy, productive lives with their disabilities.

Brenton is already a celebrity at Illawarra sporting events, regularly seen cheering on his beloved Wollongong Hawks, and he's on the sidelines every Saturday helping to coach the under 13 Woonona Bulli Bushrangers.

"He is just so connected to his community. He's achieving everything he wants to achieve, it's like all the pieces are fitting together for him," Ms Ashford-Potter said.

"With assistance from Ability Options, Brenton self-manages his individualised funding, supports, and activities."

And he has the confidence to dream big and look to the future.

Brenton also tells his mum he plans on moving out when he finds Miss Right.
